fantastic and very similar to smoked salmon
The lightly smoked version is amazing! The flavor is fantastic and very similar to smoked salmon, with a firm texture and the good portion size. It’s super filling and a great source of protein. I buy these in bulk to pack for work lunches, they are delicious served over rice with pickled veggies or on Triscuit crackers, and I can already think of a bunch of other meal ideas for them.

Top Marks for quality and flavor
August 2026: top marks for deliicous wholesome Herring fillets with tastefully smoked accent. I've been buying Crown Prince Kippered Snacks from Nova Scotia but decided to try this one packed in Poland after my usual wasn't available or reasonably priced. Glad i did

Excellent taste and texture
I started with the King Oscar kippers packed in oil and loved them, but was also curious to see what the ones packed in water would be like, since they have 20 fewer calories per can (when I treat myself to kippers I usually have 2 cans and with being on a weight loss journey, I don't really count calories but I need to be conscious of my food intake). I only ordered a single can of the water-packed, since I normally dislike water-packed canned fish but wanted to try these once. Nice surprise - the water-packed kippers had the same taste and firm texture as the regular, oil-packed ones! I liked them well enough to order a pack of a dozen cans. Update - October 17, 2026 Out of curiosity I eventually tried 3 or 4 other European brands but none turned out to be as good as the kippers from King Oscar. The texture of all the other brands was too mushy for my taste, one of them was much mushier. They were also a bit waterlogged. I'm staying with my favorite, King Oscar.

Very Good
Would rate them excellent if they were skinless. I like them with pickled red onions.

King Oscar Kipper Snacks Are The BEST!
King Oscar Kipper Snacks are the Best! Have bought many different brands of these and always come back to King Oscar. They seem to be a better quality herring and you can taste it in their products. You might find other brands a little cheaper but those don’t compare with King Oscar. I think many will agree they are the best!
