This book examines all forms of human trafficking globally, revealing the operations of the trafficking business and the nature of the traffickers themselves. Using a historical and comparative perspective, it demonstrates that there is more than one business model of human trafficking and that there are enormous variations in human trafficking in different regions of the world. Drawing on a wide body of academic research โ actual prosecuted cases, diverse reports, and field work and interviews conducted by the author over the last sixteen years in Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe, and the former socialist countries โ Louise Shelley concludes that human trafficking will grow in the twenty-first century as a result of economic and demographic inequalities in the world, the rise of conflicts, and possibly global climate change. Coordinated efforts of government, civil society, the business community, multilateral organizations, and the media are needed to stem its growth. Review: Must read on the subject - I actually got interested in this topic after watching a film on my local PBS; it was part of POV. Shelley gives an overview of human trafficking, looking at the causes behind it, how it works, and the differences in the regions of the world. The book is in depth with its analysis and Shelley has clearly thought about her subject. It is a work of scholarship. In other words, while some of the stories are really, really, really distrubing, the tone is more analytical. In part this is necessary because of the absolute disgustness of some of the stories, and it is when she is discussing the stories that Shelley is at her most emotional. What Shelley does is she also places it in the context of different rules and regulations. So despite the fact that the Netherlands has legalized brothels, Rotterdam is a trafficking hub and sex slaves are still heavily trafficked there. Yet, Sweden has similar problems. In many ways, it makes one realize the immigration issues have to be solved in a way that no one is talking about, except those like Shelley who are intelligent people with good causes. Review: Well-written and informative. - Seeking to become more knowledgeable about the issue in my neighborhood, I purchased this book as a topical primer. I was quite surprised to find that Ms. Shelley had me fully engaged from the very beginning. She writes academically, but very clearly, conveying the vastness and urgency of this issue. Thank you, Ms. Shelley, and others like you for your work on educating and combating this major crime.

Solid, Reliable Introduction to the Subject
Clearly written, well-organized, thorough overview of human trafficking as a global phenomenon. The book is accessible, very good for undergraduate course adoption, and offers important theoretical, conceptual, and empirical arguments. I chose 3, rather than 4, stars for one reason: the book tends to be repetitive. On the one hand, I appreciate the way each chapter is structured like the others, so that discussions of trafficking in, say, the Near and Middle East can be readily compared to discussions of South Asia or the Americas. However, my experience is that students tend to find the repetition bothersome. The regional case studies are very important, and I'm especially glad that the USA and Europe are included -- trafficking all-too-often gets dismissed as a problem of "over there."

Quite Informative
I had to do a research project for a college class and I did the project on Human Sex Trafficking. Shelly's book helped me out with plenty of details on the subject and additional details on other forms of Human Trafficking. Such as forced labor of women, children, and men. The book itself is a great starting point for resources. The only bad draw back was how the literature was put together. Nearly every sentence is a cited source from another book, document, link, site, or organization.

An excellent text on the subject
Human trafficking is a tragic circumstance of humanity. It is the lack of morality and lack of humanity, with the addition of greed, that has created the monster that is slavery in the 21st Century. An excellent text on the subject.

Essential source for Human Trafficking related papers
I used this in the final year of my Honours for my dissertation on Human Trafficking in Scotland and this was a key source for Human Trafficking as a whole. Overlooking the heinous topic of this text, it gives a great insight into human trafficking all over the world, is simple to use and formed the backbone of my dissertation. Although I donated most of the books I purchased to my university or sold the more expensive and excellent condition texts, I have kept this as I still enjoy going back to this and keeping my knowledge on the subject fresh.

Book was good
Book was written very generally. Raises awareness but doesn't keep you reading necessarily. A good read but be ready for general discussion on the world scale. No specifics here.

Good guidelines
This is a good book when it comes to give the guidelines to human trafficking concepts and main groups acting on it. It will be a book a will consult for sure when I start my Masters thesis next year on this subject.

This is good and well documented book
This is good and well documented book. It is a good source and also interesting for regional specialists. Labour trafficking is relatively a bit underexposed and there is some repetition in the argumentation.
