Verdi - Don Carlo

Verdi's Don Carlo is his greatest, amongst his other peak works. It defines humanism through the arts, exploring the depths of relationships and emotions expressed through the voice and the orchestra. I recommend this dvd highly, together with other outstanding recordings of this work.The principals are excellent. Caballe defines great singing. Her full, beautiful tone carries over the full cast and orchestra, and is easily reduced to an eloquent, silken thread, still full of luminous tone. Aragall is on my short list of tenors in last quarter of the 20th century. His beautiful sound shows how a good technique conserves a voice while reaching full potential. I wish there were a dozen dvd's with this great tenor. We must be grateful for what we have. Bruson demonstrates fully the high regard he earned during his career, but also the stress under which he placed his voice, resulting in shake in the voice later on in his career. His sincerity in this role stands out. The best combo of singing and acting goes to Bumbry, who does more than show her feelings through hand motions and circling. She appears to me as the gossip of the court, not just a romantic rival for Carlo, but a person who always pays attention to what others are doing and knows how to make or break reputations by spreading rumors and innuendos.The weak link belongs to a strong singer. Estes makes a big impression on the live audience- obviously his sound and live appearance do a great deal on the stage- but I cannot see him as the King of Spain. He appears more as an individual, as a bully, a tyrant. When challenged he is hurt personally, not as the monarch of a great nation. Presented in public one wonders why the kings royal robe is open in the front, revealing his quite non royal looking belly, which makes him smaller, more domestic, rather than as a public figure representing his nation. Appearing in public with Elisabetta, I can't help wondering why the same queen who suffers in private, avoiding looking at others directly. smile and takes the king's hand so warmly. There isn't a hint of her inner conflict, yet, of course, great singer that she was, Caballe wasn't Callas on the stage.In contrast to Estes as king, I recall a performance with Hakan Hagegard as Count Almaviva in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. The Count is trying to examine his options as those beneath his station are manipulating him. It is clear, throughout the scene, this Swede comes from a country which understands the difference between an elected figure who will have to compete to keep his office after a few years, and a figure connected to the monarchy of his country, conveying a sense of Divine right of authority. Seeing an American baritone in a Met production I felt that Almaviva was just a boss with a high salary who felt his perks challenged, rather than royalty feeling a place in the ruling his country. Soviet singers successfully conveyed this after decades of Communism, as the sense of what a monarch is remained there, even if became a relic of history.The conducting is good, but not on a level with someone like Giulini, whose eloquence and urgency in this work was powerful throughout.

Despite cuts, this is as fine a performance of the four act version of DON CARLO as you could possibly hope for. Stemming from the Orange Festival in France, it features it's five leads in absolutely peak form. Caballe and Bumbry easily outdo their own studio recordings of Elisabetta and Eboli and pretty much knock any of the competition off the field. Giacomo Aragall's dark sound adds a Hamlet-like brooding quality to the title role which is entirely appropriate. Bruson and Estes are likewise, superb.Thomas Fulton paces the score beautifully.The sound recording, like that of the widely circulated Orange performance of NORMA with Caballe and Vickers, is extremely poor. Amplified sound for outdoor performance compresses badly when reduced for CD. The sound is extremely "tinny" and unpleasant throughout.Somewhat oddly for a performance of this nature, there is a full libretto and translation.One must make special mention of the filler, Argentinian soprano Adelaide Negri singing "Tu che le vanita". Negri has always been a highly problematic singer. Of astounding range and technique, her voice just doesn't have the simpatico qualities needed to illuminate the Italian repertoire. She particularly suffers in comparison to Caballe. One wishes that the Phillip/Inquisitor scene had been included rather than this poorly sung aria.

Filmed live at the Roman arena in Orange, this Don Carlo benefits from the authentic ping in the the voices as they bounce back from the 7300 spectators and ancient stones. Chose DTS 5.0 The cast is superb and in their prime. Aragall had the most beautiful sound of the four star tenors of his time--Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti and himself. Scotto has said it in interviews and I heard him live in San Francisco as Werther and Maurizio as well as Don Carlo. His squillo radiates around his fervent tone. He was always nervous and that enhances his portrayal of Carlo, the odd prince. He is beautiful to watch and his duets with Caballe and Bruson are spellbinding dances, filled with what Thomas Mann called "Spanish Etiquette"--grave and to-the-death. Bruson sings with high Verdi style; his gorgeous voice has deep sadness. Caballe outdoes herself on this night, always taking her time with her ascending kong lines, swelling her inimitable dark timbre. She opens up her voice at climaxes and astonishes the listener.. Bumbry dramatizes Eboli's two arias in contrasting ways. She has the wit and technique for the veil song and the self loathing for her tremendous "O don Fatale". Her voice cuts sumptuously and the crowd erupts. Simon Estes did not leave many DVDs but here he sings Fillipo with a glorious upper register, deep commitment, and implacable dignity. He is the most underrated singer in this group. Thomas Fulton conducts a detailed, varied account of this grandest of all Verdi's operas. Too bad the orchestra lets him down. Indeed, too bad he left us all so soon. Although the picture is dark, the spotlight captures individual singers and shows total commitment on their faces. Of all the many Don Carlo CDs and DVDs I own, this performance (along with the Solti/Tebaldi/Bergonzii/Chiaurov/Talvela CD) will draw me back compulsively for a long time.

This version of the opera is quite different at the beginning from any others I've heard: the scene at Fontainebleau has been cut out altogether; the opera starts at the monastery of San Yuste, where Carlo laments the loss of Elisabetta as a fait accompli, in a somewhat different version of his Fontainebleau aria from the one I'm used to. This is a pity as I prefer unabridged versions. But never mind, the beauty of Jaime Aragall's voice more than compensates for this.With 5 unsurpassable principals like these in this most poignant and beautiful Verdi opera, what more can I say except that it's a must-have.

The finest Don Carlo with Jaume Aragall from a very windy "Orange" a strong mistral.

Réunir 5 super-stars dans un lieu magique, ce n'est pas toujours possible. Ici, dans le cadre enchanteur des arènes d'Orange c'est devenu faisable en cette nuit de 1984.Pour La Caballé ce n'était pas une nouveauté puisqu'elle y avait triomphé, dix ans plus tôt, dans une "Norma" mémorable qui n'a jamais été égalée depuis. Mais les autres.... Simon Estes est impressionnant dans le rôle de Phiulippe II, de par sa prestance mais aussi sa voix puissante au timbre cuivré qui monte sans efforts jusqu'aux plus hauts gradins. Son grand duo avec Rodrigo est un moment inoubliable. Il faut dire que Renato Bruson était, à cette époque, le plus grand baryton vderdien avec Cappuccilli. Son legato, sa ligne de chant, sa virilité étaient remarquables. Grace Bumbry est égale à elle-même, féline, féminine, fébrile, et ses deux airs sont très applaudis. Le couple Aragall-Caballé ne s'unit vraiment vocalement qu'au dernier acte, avec ces timbres cristallins qui en font un duo unique. Une soirée historique, donc, même si l'image et le son ne convient plus à ce que nous sommes en droit d'exiger aujourd'hui.

Il DVD riproduce un'edizione del Don Carlo registrata il 13 luglio 1984 dal Théatre Antique di Orange. Buono nel complesso il cast vocale ove spicca una straordinaria Montserrat Caballé. Il lirismo di Giacomo Aragall si attaglia molto bene al complesso personaggio di Don Carlo; impeccabile, come sempre, Renato Bruson; efficace, anche scenicamente, la Eboli disegnata da Grace Bumbry. Non sempre a suo agio, specie nella pronuncia, Simon Estes nel ruolo di Filippo II. Luigi Roni, pur vocalmente apprezzabile, appare troppo agile nel ruolo di un novantenne cieco.Sbrigativa, in alcuni passaggi, la direzione dell'Orchestre National de France di Thomas Fulton, Non troppo convincente, invece, la messa in scena: in particolare la presentazione del Frate (CarloV) e quella di Eboli in maschera all'inizio del II atto sono del tutto incomprensibili per chi non conosce l'intera vicenda: una scelta di regia, dunque, non adatta per la versione in 4 atti di questo capolavoro.Nel complesso, comunque, pur non potendo proporsi come edizione di riferimento, si tratta di una produzione apprezzabile e in molti punti godibile per gli appassionati.

Dès le début, les micros apparaissent totalement insuffisants pour une si grande scène... en plein air, et mal disposés, ne tenant pas compte de la mise en scène ni des déplacements des chanteurs !Les voix disparaissent ou s'enflent DÈS que les artistes bougent, trahissant l'équilibre dramatique et souvent le sens musical.C'est la raison de l'étoile manquante.Mise en scène honnête de J.C. Auvray, qui nous a parfois habitués à mieux - mais il faut reconnaître qu'occuper l'espace de cette scène immense de façon naturelle, avec une oeuvre où alternent masses chorales imposantes à mouvoir, duos dramatiques etc, n'est pas facile vu le contexte, pour garder une homgénéité du récit.Je n'ai pas trop aimé les décors de Jean-Paul Chambas. Ils ne nuisent pas, mais ne feront pas école.Mais, là encore, tenir compte ensemble des impératifs du lieu, de la scénographie, de la Musique...Ils sont sans grand style, pas même symboliques ( ou trop: la mappemonde de Philippe II, etc ). Mais rien de catastrophique.Les éclairages sont efficaces pour la captation télévisuelle.Pas d' utilisation abusive du Mur historique, ce que l'on aurait pu redouter.Les réactions des festivaliers et journalistes furent à l'époque souvent dithyrambiques, et compte tenu des voix en présence je pense que c'était justifié: j'aurais bien voulu y être.....Quelques remarques à faire au plan artistique :Giacomo Aragall ( Don Carlo, l'Infant ) dont le timbre cuivré a le mérite de " passer " un orchestre poussé par Thomas Fulton souvent sans soucis des voix ni de la scénographie ( mais la captation sonore n'arrange rien et je pense que les spectateurs eurent plus de plaisir que nous ), manque parfois de moelleux au début, avec quelques aigus... tendus..Mais il est viril, vaillant, solide, dégage une incontestable présence de bon comédien.Reconnaissons un voix généreuse, belle et ductile.Simon Estes ( Philippe II ) est bien. Mais sa scène d'ouverture " Ella giammai m'amo " relève trop du décilbel, ce qui comble le public mais ne reflète que peu le désespoir d'un homme accablé par son infortune, sauf à penser qu'il s'agit d'une révolte contre le sort.Nicholaï Ghiaurov s'en sortait mieux, plus sincère dans sa sensibilité. Boris Christoff, légendaire, a je pense approché la perfection avec sa voix noire et une présence scénique qui s'imposait sans effort, et avec un cabotinage... souverain.Ne boudons pas notre plaisir, Estes est un beau Philippe, dont l'autorité implacable, dès sa première scène, prépare au drame.Grace Bumbry nous régale d'un timbre magnifique et d'un souffle inépuisable, mais dans les ensembles chante parfois... un peu au-dessus.Et puis, je fais me faire des ennemis, mais je trouve qu'elle manque d'une classe véritable dans ses gestes. Mais elle est une vraie passionnée, ce personnage colle à la volonté de Verdi, ceci équilibre cela.Renato Bruson ( Posa ) avait à l'époque l' un des plus beaux timbres qui soient, riche et noir s'il le fallait, lié à un style verdien véritable.( Son Macbeth fut magnifique, un jalon dans l'opera eponyme face à Shirley Verrett ).C'est un artiste que l'on sait intelligent, et sa personnification le rend attachant. Il forme avec Aragall un duo équilibré, l'on croit à cette amitié.Monserrat Caballe ( Elisabeth de Valois ) était à ce moment au sommet de son art, qui est immense.Voix très souple, pianissimi de légende, puissance souveraine, timbre touchant, rayonnement de féminité prenant.On se FICHE de son physique un peu enveloppé.Ferais-je observer que l'on n'est pas au cinéma, que les qualités requises pour chanter l'Opera, et Verdi en particulier, sont... inaccessibles à la majorité d'entre nous. Un peu de retenue dans les exigences, par décence.Elle fut un miracle du chant. Je me répète: la captation en plein air ne favorise personne.Cela dit, " Tu que le vanita " a rendu le public... fou.Tout s'arrête lorsqu'elle est là. Qui l'a remplacée ?Je n'ai pas parlé du Grand Inquisiteur de Luigi Roni: il tient son rôle. Si son affrontement à Philippe n'est pas historique, il est très correct.Mais son personnage ne joue pas le rôle dramatiquement important qu'il a dans, par exemple, le spectacle du Met avec Domingo, Freni, Ghiaurov, Bumbry, direction James Levine. Autre belle soirée.Quand on pense que la confrontation Nicolaï Ghiaurov ( Inquisiteur ) / Boris Christoff ( Philippe II ) à la Scala n'a PAS été enregistrée !... Ghiaurov rêvait de remplacer son aîné Christoff , et cette rivalité... électrisait la scène.Je ne veux pas lasser.Le mieux est d' assister à cette BELLE SOIRÉE.Regrettons le GROS défaut de la prise de son et des couleurs un peu saturées et baveuses: pas de restauration, qui vaudrait vraiment la peine, y compris pour le son, vu ce témoignage historique dans l'histoire de l' Opera, - C'est du direct, du " live " disent certains: DU VIVANT... HISTORIQUE MALGRÉ LES QUELQUES RÉSERVES !
