MDX-650

This is a wonderful tool for checking batteries. We had a similar unit that quit working after a long period of use, & we HAD to get another because we could not function in our store without it. It tells the "Truth" about batteries. We trust it 100%

Checks cold cranking amps. CCA. Gives a positive reading as to good or bad. Have used it now for about a year it has not let me down. Wal-Mart automotive department uses it. I use it mainly on my 8D batteries. Nothing else checks it so accurately.

This is definitely a professional grade battery tester, and my understanding is that it is the tool of choice for many professional mechanics and shops. The build quality is excellent and very durable. It will pretty much test any common configuration of lead acid starting batteries....flooded, AGM, Gel etc. The tool is easy to use and the menus are self explanatory for the most part. In addition to starting/cranking amp test, it offers a start time/current test, and a charging system test. I also like that it has the capability to determine an insufficient clamp/terminal connection to avoid erroneous test results. As much as I like this tester, I do have a few minor criticisms: Firstly, the terminal clamps are a bit too small to get good purchase on an installed battery....at least the ones in my truck.....I wish the connector jaws would open wide enough to comfortably grip across my battery cable connectors. Second, the tester comes with a nice quality, but excessively large tool bag....I would have preferred a more compact impact resistant case. Third, this tester is priced several times higher than other reasonably capable units. That said, if you prefer to invest in pro grade tools and you are looking for the gold standard of starting battery testers, this is it.

We're not a shop but we do a little bit of work. My family owns a small trucking company. Just six trucks. Batteries are one of our most expensive disposable items to replace aside from tires. Each battery runs approximately $200 and there's four batteries in every truck. As an owner and a driver I can tell you that we greatly rely upon these batteries on the road. With shop labor costing upwards of $300 an hour anymore whatever we can do for ourselves now is best. With that said this tester is extremely easy to use. It gives all of the information that we need when making a decision whether we can live with the battery the way it is or to replace the unit. I really like the simplicity of this tester. It tests my industrial batteries but also retail car batteries too. It's a great tool to have in the arsenal when testing your vehicles. Easy to set up and easy to use it doesn't get any more plug and play than this.

Purchased 2 Red Top Optima batteries a few years back (3-4 years). Both vehicles had similar issues that the battery would die after a few days of sitting. I tested both and the tester showed "Good - Recharge" (in and out of vehicle). I tried charging both batteries and they would get about half way charged and then show 100% on 3 chargers I tried. Unfortunately the Optima batteries fooled the chargers and tester when trying to charge and this tester didn't catch that these batteries were bad. Replaced one of them with a battery from O'Reillys and don't have to worry about jump starting the car. Other red top, just have to drive it to keep it from discharging fast.

THE TESTER INDICATE IT TEST STARTER BUT IT DOES NOT . SPOKE TO TECH SUPPORT AND HE ADMIT IT DOES NOT TEST STARTER, IT JUST A SALE PITCH. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY STOOP THIS LOW. IT BREAK DOWN A LOT AND WASTING TOO MUCH OF OUR TIME. IT JUST ANOTHER CHEAP MADE ,OVER PRICE PRODUCT

We have two boats, a camper and 3 cars at this house and so I'm dealing with batteries a lot! Most of the time they're great and take care of themselves, but sometimes... they don't. This is the first electrical system tester I've had and it's so easy to use and so far has been perfectly accurate. It comes with nice, long leads and an easy to read display. The operation of the unit is very intuitive. Connect the battery, it senses the battery and turns on and displays the voltage. Then select a few options like 'in/out of the vehicle', then battery type, then CCA, and seconds later it displays results. I took it around and checked all of my batteries. My boat and camper batteries sit in my garage for the winters where I keep them trickle charged occasionally. I also have an old battery that I haven't disposed of yet hanging around. It seemed to work flawlessly. I don't know that I'll need to use this very often, but when I have those moments (and they do happen) when I'm trying to determine a battery/alternator problem... I'm glad I have this.

I like how it steps me through the process and tells me whether each thing is "good" or "bad" without me having to look up or remember specification limits.
