desertcart.com: The Year of My Miraculous Reappearance eBook : Hyde, Catherine Ryan: Kindle Store Review: Quiet truth - This book was hard to read at first. In fact the only reason I kept reading it was I had read other books written by Catherine Ryan Hyde and knew she wrote worthwhile stories. It was hard to read because I don't like books about mistreated kids, it is not only sad but also frustrating. This book was neat because there are adults who helped this kid, just not her mother. In the end it was an grateful story, uplifting in many ways. A great book, one we all should read, if only to know people can help lift up other people. Review: but once I connected with the story and the characters I felt the author gave a good insight into what alcoholism can do to a family - It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I connected with the story and the characters I felt the author gave a good insight into what alcoholism can do to a family. Cynthie showed a lot of courage and character to face up to becoming an alcoholic (as her Mother was no role model) and having the conviction to attend an AA program which helped her face her fears and progress her strengths and through it, have the maturity at 18 to take on the responsibility of looking after her handicapped brother Bill, who she loved very much, showed the heartwarming side of the story. Would certainly recommend as a good teen read.

I enjoyed this book
written from the perspective of a 13 year old and the choices she made growing up in a single parent alcoholic household... alcoholism and neglect is real and unfortunately generational. I have also seen society stereotype and put people in a bucket up on a shelf bc it's too ugly and, and if they oversimplify and distance themselves from other human beings by doing this, they get to avoid and pass judgement. it's ignorant and sad, but the older I get the more I see it just is... remember it is not necessary to earn the respect of such selfish and ignorant people. maybe this book can help those who do judge, see that survivors of alcoholism in their family are truly incredible people and deserve respect if not admiration for overcoming such hardship vs the alternative of judgement and superiority so often demonstrsted. which is false superiority by the way... so hats off to all survivors !! you are to be celebrated, not cast aside. don't let anyone let u feel like less.... good story, and a simplistic and honest depiction of how being around or becoming an addict is. good read for those who stereotype and good read for those directly affected by alcoholism. it's not a super heavy book. but it has a lot of power I think.

Another Winner! Coming of age
What a great book. When I first started reading it, I got so depressed I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish the book. But I've read other books by Catherine Ryan Hyde and knew she was taking me on a journey that eventually I'd be glad I continued to the end. And WOW am I glad I stuck with her. Cynthia is the main character. When the book begins she is only 13 years old. Cynthia has lived a hard, horrible life. Reading about it will break your heart. I'm not going to tell anymore about the story but I will say to anyone who wants to read a good book with great characters, this is one not to miss. I very rarely purchase books, but I will be looking to purchase, borrow more Catherine Ryan Hyde stories-I mean books.

Deeply Touching
One of the best Hyde books I've read. The characters are so vivid and realistic you feel as though you actually know them. The ups and downs are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. The book leaves you feeling happy and hopeful and full of admiration for what the characters accomplished. Excellent book!!

A Wonderful Read!
Where Catherine Ryan Hyde gets her storylines I do not know, but her novels are always different, compelling, with a gritty realism that pushes the reader to look below the surface of her characters in attempting to understand significant issues. While the subject of this novel: child abuse, alcoholism and child custody may entice the reader to look away, Hyde's characters force the reader to look deep within to recognize the personalization of such deep traumatic issues. Identifying cause and effect can yield a greater understanding of such problems for which there are no easy answers. Hyde uses her writing and characterizations to help readers identify the deeply personal experiences of large social issues. The complexity of the lives she writes about reveal to the reader that "the personal is political" and that social problems concern PEOPLE, not just politics. I highly recommend all of Hyde's work!

This is a book that makes for difficult reading! If you know anything about this kind of addiction, you will read how it looks from the viewpoint of a pre-teen . . . One who all-unknowing is being drawn into that world. And yet there is still hope out there from someone who cares.
