Check for some downloadable utilities to help get your "Start" button back and you'll warm up to Windows 8 much more easily.
The hardware and performance of the laptop are honestly top notch, especially considering the price. Windows 8 takes some getting used to as it is quite different than Windows 7 and its predecessors. The update to Windows 8.1 really helps for usability for most users. Check for some downloadable utilities to help get your "Start" button back and you'll warm up to Windows 8 much more easily.

3 months in & wish I could bail
I bought this laptop at the beginning of January 2014. I'm not on my computer 24/7 for work or personal tasks, in fact what I need a computer to do is very minimal. However, this machine has been nothing but a problem since about a month after I got it and at that point it was too late to return. The touch pad randomly stops working (right now I'm using a usb mouse because I forgot how I fixed the issue the last time), it runs slower than dial-up internet, not to mention Windows 8 is a total mess. I was able to install a shell to make Windows function like a normal computer, but the Windows 8 features still pop up unexpectedly and interrupt me in the middle of tasks, and navigating myself back to where I was is confusing and frustrating. At one point it turned on but nothing else happened until I held the power button to force restart--twice. I'm looking into what it would take to get rid of this constantly malfunctioning machine and replace it with one that works. I read tons of positive reviews before purchasing this product, so maybe it's just my machine, but either way I'm incredibly dissatisfied.

Not higher than 3 stars due to some awkward items listed
There are a few reasons that I am not rating this higher than 3 stars -1 - I am unable to disable the touchpad and I keep hitting it when I am typing.2 - The numerical keypad is awkward because a touch typist will use the thumb for the 0. Unfortunately, the right arrow key is where the 0 key normally is.3 - There are only 2 USB ports. My wireless mouse uses one, so I only have one left and have to resort to another device to connect 2 flash drives or an external hard drive and a flash drive.4 - The SD card slot is on the front UNDER the laptop, which is not convenient to use - on the side would be much better.

Nice laptop.
Love this computer! We have had a larger Asus laptop for over a year and found it very reliable. For the price, this is a really nice laptop. I like the keyboard touch and the fact that it has a 10 key numeric on the side. Not many laptops in this price range have them. I'll say it again.....Love the laptop, hate Win8!!

Disappointing
I've only had this laptop for about a month and I've already had to contact Asus' tech support four times--and the problems with the computer are still not resolved! The cursor freezes and I have to manually restart; the machine randomly turned itself off a couple of times when I was in the middle of doing something; the machine started beeping and wouldn't stop. I am really disappointed. The machine itself is lightweight, stays cool, and boots up and shuts off quickly, which is why I'm not giving the X552EA only one star. Also, the tech support reps have been polite and generally responsive. But the online chats in which I got instructions on doing various types of resets in hopes of fixing the brand-new computer were supposed to be emailed to me and never came through, and when I emailed to ask about this I was told the chats couldn't be retrieved. I asked follow-up questions a couple days ago and am still waiting on a response. All of this and the OS--Windows 8--is awful and counterintuitive, and every time I touch the touchpad I'm accidentally landed back somewhere on Windows 8 I didn't mean to be. This hasn't happened to me with any other computer. And while trying to get to the bottom of this, the return period ended, so I'm stuck with the machine. UGH I'M SO FRUSTRATED!

This sucks!
The short and sweet of it is: the DVD drive doesn't work, none of the F keys work, the esc key works sometimes, headphone jack doesn't work, volume keys don't work, brightness keys don't work. ASUS home page is no help since they just tell you to go to a chat room and find a solution to your issues. I really regret buying this product. I wanted something that my kids would be able to use for school work and browsing the internet, but this product is down most of the time and half of the features don't work. After one wwek of having this P.O.S. I was fed up, but gave it a month anyway. I should have returned it that first week. This product sucks!

Both USB drive hardware failed after only a year. ...
Both USB drive hardware failed after only a year. I used to be a fan of Asus, but they've really let me down with my last two laptops.
