What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror. Review: Child horror - Good film, bit scary in places, good storyline Review: Evil Superman - Underrated but very good movie

Evil Superman
Underrated but very good movie

What if Superman was Evil? ...a horror movie with a hint of supernatural elements.
A reinvented account to superhero horror based on one of my favourites which is Superman. Set in Brightburn in Kansas, a barren couple found a baby in a spaceship outside their Farmhouse. As Ten years passed, the nice boy named Brandon, exhibits personality alter and showed lack of remorse when he is hearing otherworldly voices from the spaceship at the barn to "take the world". Things took an unexpected turn. Better than I expected when they take a superman original plot and twisted it in asking us on what if Superman was Evil? This movie feels like a horror movie than a superhero one because it leans towards creepy atmosphere and suspense. Even supernatural like in approach. The special effects are excellent and the kills are even better than Pet Semetary and Child's Play remake that came out at the same year of 2019. Is it shocking? In a way they are, it is no Hostel or that sicko Serbian thingy but Brightburn is more decent and entertaining. I heard people whining about no character development or why is there no good inside Brandon who is the character that is the antihero? I felt for the characters and cared about them, Banks and Denham are believable and had chemistry, certainly likable people. There is enough character development for this movie than another rerun of Christopher Reeve shenanigans of finding a crystal and speaking to his parents in blocks of ice. As for the personality, it altered like a flick of the switch so no good in this boy left to express in his genes from another planet. The viewer does not have to be spoon-fed on the details but can create their own addition to this story. The plot is well paced, no dull moments with great acting, good subtle music score as well. Any negative points to the movie? I have a couple. I wish it was ten more minutes longer because I didn't want it to end and I wished I seen it on the big screen back in June 2019. What a fun ride. I will watch it again.

One time watch
Good, felt short, probably set at this scale sue to budget. Reminds me of Chronicle, felt they could have pushed this further into either antihero of horror but chose neither or both just missing a certain polish. Lack of character depth, developed story too quickly. Final plane crash would have been expensive but maybe what was needed to give it a more satisfying ending.

Not a new idea but this is executed very well
The power corrupts, super power is super corrupting idea is not exactly new, it has been done in a number of different ways already, usually focusing upon adults though (two of the best I think are The Boys, in comics and now Amazon Prime studios, also the comics Uber, relating to the idea of Uber Men). This is a sort of retelling of the Superman origins story, only with things playing out very differently, there are three films that it reminded me strongly of one is Chronicle (although again dealing with a different age group, also with the found footage and social media themes which this does not), the next is the Omen (particularly in one scene) and finally, due to some of the style of presentation, including the more gruesome violence, Hereditary. If you liked any or all of those features then do not miss this one. I could mention Watchmen, I have mentioned The Boys but I think this is more horror than those movies. The performances and casting choices in this feature are brilliant, there are some really genuinely unsettling scenes and it is not always the shock of violence, traumatic injury or deaths which are relied upon in evoking the horror. There is some genuinely edgy, tense dialogue and dynamics, most importantly I am glad to say that none of the protagonists come off as "plastic" or "expendable" as can be the case in some horror productions. There are also some cool hat tips to pop culture and the superhero genre fiction which has inspired this movie for the most part. Recommended.

Great movie - but is it a joke at Brandon Routh's expense?
Rather like those occasional mirror universe episodes of Star Trek, this is a terrific tale of the boy who could be Superman but went bad. It's highly derivative of course - a childless farm couple rescue and adopt a baby from a meteorite, but the glowing remains in the barn that eventually call to him have a very different destiny in mind. Much scary/creepy/bloodthirsty stuff ensues, with more than a nod to The Omen as the innocent-looking boy creates havoc. Some nice nods to Superman - the scarlet blanket that could be a cape - and the whole Smallville feel of the community. It also tips a big hat to 70s/80s horror flicks, not least The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as another imperilled white female tries to escape a grisly end. I do wonder if there's a big in-joke at play - it's a film about a 'Bad Superman' named Brandon, in what may be a not-so-nice nod to Brandon Routh in Superman Returns.

One of the most creepy films I have ever seen.
The premise is 'what if...' and if you enjoy an undercurrent of sci-fi with 90% scares and 10% gore, take care to avoid all prior knowledge of the plot or the trailer, then this film will reward in spade loads. However, this is not for the faint hearted. Several moments in the film had me jumping out of me skin, and nearly diving for the back of the sofa. My wife doesn't like the scary ones, and to be honest, I nearly woke her up half way through viewing. Several commentators have mentioned 'b movie' in their appraisal. I would say it's not that the effects are bad, but that effects are secondary to the main plot. This is different, bold, imaginative and downright creepy!

Really enjoyed this twisted and Dark look at the Superman story. I'd say it's more thriller than horror but do expect jump scares. Thoroughly enjoyed it

Great movie, but the main child lead scared the heck out of me.

Enjoyed it. Was good, had a few jumpy moments. Liked the twist of what if a certain superhero turned evil instead of good. Recommend it.
