The Definitive Collection

This greatest hit set blows away previous ABBA greatest hits sets. It has all their hits and great album tracks, thereby completely making "Gold" and "More Gold" obsolete. Most people still refuse to acknowledge ABBA as a worthy musical entity simply because their music is poppy and their lyrics aren't socialogically significant. However their tunes and carefully crafted productions are, and will be timeless. The songwritering team of Anderson-Ulvaeus are as strong as Lennon and McCartney when crafting melodies. The two female singers, Anni-Frid and Agnetha, are very good and underrated vocalists who do a superb job of layering their vocals to fit their songs. From the excitment of "Waterloo" to the disco beat of "Dancing Queen," from the horn-driven "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" to the super-low bass synth in "One of Us" this two disc has it all. Put them in your CD and let it go. Don't worry if you can't "get" what other artists are trying to tell you or if their "angst" doesn't move you. Just put ABBA on and smile. Good music does that. You'll be singing these songs for days. Sometimes good music doesn't have to be about anything---and thats what makes it good.

This is a good album if you want "ABBA's hits.

After you buy this album do not buy another Abba greatest hits album. I have been listening to Abba since 1973. Several Abba greatest hits vinyl and cds are on the market. Buy only this one. This worthy of purchase. Whether its to good marketing or greed, all of their early greatest hits albums, to include the early ones are just reproductions with a different cover design. It is the same on the Abba Store on Amazon If you look closely, on some discs, only one or two songs are different or in a different listing Buy this album then,is you have mp3 download capability,buy the one or two songs you like from other greatest hits. I don't have that ability yet........... These songs are timeless--------- That is why they got a five. I am 59 years old, my mom will be 81 next month and I just ordered Ring Ring disc from 1973 for her--------Had not listen to them for 20 or so years, seriously. I got this for my mom for her birthday. I knew she liked ABBA but also that the last time she had any records, they were actual records, because if she'd had them on cassette or CD, I'd have grown up hearing them. I got this and the new ABBA album for her birthday, and she's been listening to this nonstop. I have never seen her so happy. She keeps dancing to the songs and it looks a bit silly, but she's just so happy! She hasn't even gotten to the new album yet, she's listening to this one so much. So basically? If you need a gift for a Gen X-er and you're not sure what to get, grab this. Even if they're not a superfan like my mom, no one *hates* ABBA.

Una recopilación muy completa, hecho en falta 2 canciones en versión española, pero bueno, en el CD de ABBA Gold están. Así disponemos también de la versión en Inglés. El DVD está tambien muy completo con 35 videoclips. Muy chulo.

Fast 20 Jahre hat es nach der Auflösung der Gruppe gebraucht, bis im Jahr 2002 mit der Doppel-CD "The Definitve Collection" die erste wirklich komplette ABBA Hitsammlung veröffentlicht wurde. Während das inzwischen zum Klassiker geratene, megaerfolgreiche "ABBA GOLD" (1992) sich mehrheitlich an den britischen Erfolgen der Gruppe orientiert und zudem wie unzählige andere ABBA Best of Scheiben nur eine Einzel-CD ist, lässt die Doppel-CD "The Definitve Collection" als Karriereüberblick wirklich keinen Wunsch mehr offen. Das hat gleich mehrere Gründe: Zum Einen hatten ABBA in ihrer enorm erfolgreichen Karriere weltweit viel mehr große Hits, als auf eine einzelne CD passen. Somit konnte keine der wirklich unzähligen ABBA Best of Scheiben, die während und vor allem nach ihrer Karriere auf den Markt kamen, den Anspruch einer kompletten Hitsammlung erfüllen. "The Definitive Collection" enthält als erste ABBA Hitsammlung wirklich alle Singles, die internatonal oder mindestens in einem der großen Märkte USA, Großbritannien und Deutschland erschienen sind. Ebenso enthält es die 4 Singles von ABBAs 1973er Debutalbum "Ring Ring", die noch vor ihrem weltweiten Durchbruch mit "Waterloo" in nur wenigen Ländern, wie ihrer Heimat Schweden, erschienen sind. Neben den unzähligen weltweiten Hits wie "Fernando", "Dancing Queen", "The Winner takes it all" oder "Take a chance on me" findet man somit hier auch das lediglich in Großbritannien als Single A-Seite erschienene "Angeleyes" (1979), außerdem die nur in den USA erschienenen Singles "On and on and on", "The Visitors" und "When all is said and done". Auch aus deutscher Sicht zahlt sich die Hitsammlung aus. Viele Hits, die auf "ABBA Gold" aus Platzgründen oder mangelhaftem britischen Chartserfolg durchfielen, finden sich ebenso hier: "Honey Honey", "I do, I do, I do", "Summer Night City", "Eagle" oder "The Day before you came", allesamt deutsche Top 10 Erfolge sowie "So Long", das hierzulande Platz 11 erreichte. Statt nur 19 Hits wie auf der Einzel CD "ABBA Gold" enthält die Doppel-CD "The Definitve Collection" somit 35 ABBA Hits und zwei Remixe. Damit findet hier sowohl der britische wie auch der deutsche und amerikanische Fan alle in seinem Land veröffentlichten ABBA Singles auf einer Hitsammlung. "The Definitive Collection" - die einzige ABBA Hitsammlung, die diesen Namen verdient und die sowohl musikalisch als auch von der Zusammenstellung her ein ungeschlagenes Meisterwerk ist.
