Sizzle and Burn (Arcane Society Series Book 3)

SIZZLE AND BURN is the third book in the Arcane Society series. The Arcane series is a series about the society for those with psychic powers and those within the society who are attempting to create ways to enhance their powers for evil. The series takes place in three different eras (historical, contemporary and futuristic) as Jayne Ann Krentz writes books for this series under her name and two pseudonyms (Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle). SIZZLE AND BURN is the story of Raine Tallentyre, who hears voices when she touches items related to strong negative emotions. She has been working with the police to help solve cold cases. When she makes a discovery, she comes to the attention of a serial killer. Zack Jones is a psychic investigator who comes to meet Raine because of her family's history of working on a formula to enhance psychic abilities. The Jones family has been prominent in the series as the "good" guys. The Jones family has been in charge of the society since its founding. Raine and Zack have a very strong attraction to one another and their talents are similiar. Zack gets images of death and violence when touching objects. The similarity of the talents of Raine and Zack makes for a particularly emotional book since both suffer for their talents. The time that the two spend together dealing with the backlash from use of their talents creates a deep intimacy between Raine and Zack. This couple is also the most connected yet since they begin to have a mental intimacy where they can sense each other being in danger. These psychic intimacies combine with shared secrets to provide a solid foundation for their relationship. Raine is a particularly strong woman because of her past and her particular talent. She is definitely a partner in this investigation and not someone who needs to be coddled and rescued. Zack is a strong, principled man but his vulnerability with Raine is also very attractive. The suspense elements of the story are unpredictable and keep the pages turning. For fans of the series, there are more revelations about the conspiracy that is slowly being revealed in this series. This book feels most connected to the first book of the series SECOND SIGHT because it is in many ways a contemporary analog to that book. Krentz has done a good job here, however, in not making this book dependent upon the previous books. A new reader can still enjoy this book even though it is best read as part of the series. While the story introduced here is wrapped up in this book, there are obviously still questions that need to be answered about the larger conspiracy. Luckily those questions operate as incentives to read more books rather than giving the impression that this book is incomplete. This is one of my favorite books of the series.

Jayne Ann Krentz has done again what she does so well, give us a great read. I must admit the Arcane Society has not been one of my favorite settings for her books but this time I really loved it. It reminded me of the great novels she wrote about St. Helens, AMARYLLIS, ORCHID,and ZINNIA. This adventure is set in our world and time but the romance and paranormal powers are pure Jayne Ann Krentz. Zack Jones is a detective with J&J, the agency is a cover for the Arcane Society to find and help people who are psychic. They also are in a race against the Nightshade Cabel, another group of Psychics who are willing to do anything to gain power in this world. Raine Tallentyre's father was a member of the Society. He was a scientist who wanted to study and evolve the formula the Society protects, that enhances psychic powers. When his lab was discovered and destroyed Raine and her Aunt went into hiding and now her name has come up in the fight against Nightshade. Raine has been living quietly outside Seattle, she has been helping a detective solve cold cases. But Raine is lonely and knows only too well that men have a hard time accepting her gifts. Togather Zack and Raine must face the danger, now that Nightshade seems to want something from her. Zack must protect her from the Cabel, as well as convince her that Jones in not another name for the devil. Zack and Raine have to discover that tho they are strong psychics, they are twice as strong togather. I loved it but I always like Jayne's books. She knows just how to make a romance hot without making it too graphic. I like the way we know the feelings of both parties and the adventure and mystery are great too.

I have been a fan of Amanda Quick, and I just now realized that she has continued her Arcane Series under her other name, Jane Ann Krentz. I have only recently become a fan of modern day romance/mysteries and this book made a fun leap from Victorian England to modern day USA. I always wondered what would happen to some of my favorite characters familys and socities and Sizzle and Burn answered that question. Being a Mom of an acitve 18 month old baby, you don't have a lot of time to devote to reading, but what is great about this book is that it was easy to pick up where I left off and not have to reread to remember the thread of the story. If you are going on vacation or just need a book that can be read in small doses, this is a great one. Mystery and romance are combined to solve a serial killer murder and the end has a great twist that even I didn't see coming!

This was the 3rd in a trilogy. It was another Jayne Ann Krentz book that was a pleasure to read!

Have to love JAK. Arcane Society books stand the test of time. They also span time. Past, present and future. This is one of my absolute favorites of the series, and Jayne's unique universe she has crafted across her three nom de plumes. Raine and Zack are the perfect not perfect couple finding each other while dealing with a serial killer, rogue agents, psychic abilities. Part thriller, mystery, romance delivered in Jayne Ann Krentz's wonderful writing.

Jayne Ann Krentz is one of those authors where I buy everything she publishes, even stories published under other names. I will admit that there have been a few duds along the way, but this one was stellar. I am enjoying the series more than I thought I would (I'm not into paranormal story lines in general). I won't try to recap the story line, but if you are a fan of her work you will certainly enjoy this book. Both hero and heroine are likeable, and the chemistry between them seems believable. I hate it when an author has the hero and heroine fight with each other for 90% of the book, and fall in love the other 10%. In this story the H and H obviously are intrigued with each other and willing to take a chance together from almost the moment they meet. Highly recommended.

Raine Tallentyre has a special paranormal ability: She is able to feel the thoughts or emotions of people who feel rather strongly in a certain moment - like murderers for example - by touching something that was in contact with the stongly feeling person. She uses her ability to help solve cold cases. Her partner at the police rebuffes her, when she tries to change their relationship to a romantical one. She is hurt by this, since his refusal is partly or mainly because she is a psychic. With a lonely future looming before her she goes to Shelbyville, Washington, where she wants to settle her aunt's estate and put it on the market. In her aunt's basement, Raine is lead by her psychic senses to a bound young woman - most likely the work of a serial killer. Awhile Zack Jones visits Shelbyville on behalf of the Arcane Society. He is an investigator for J&J (Jones and Jones) and needs information from Raine Tallentyre. They are both attracted to each other and Zack has no problem accepting her psychic side, since he himself has a similar ability. They have to find out who the serial killer is, since he is now targeting Raine, as well as who is behind a cabal of psychic criminalists, that targets the Arcane Society... The book is suspenseful and fast-paced. It is sensual and contains a hero and heroine who support each other emotionally and in other ways. Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense - Paranormal

Always love reading Jayne Ann Krentz books, and Sizzle and Burn is a good one in my opinion. Hope you enjoy it too
