NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER โข The first definitive history of Israelโs targeted killing programs, which have shaped the Israeli nation, the Middle East, and the larger worldโfrom the man hailed by David Remnick as โarguably [Israelโs] best investigative reporter.โ โAn exceptional work, a humane book about an incendiary subject . . . full of shocking moments, surprising disturbances in a narrative full of fateful twists and unintended consequences.โโ The New York Times WINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD IN HISTORY โข ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times โข A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The Economist, The New York Times Book Review, BBC History Magazine, Mother Jones The Talmud says: โIf someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.โ This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israelโs DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small, sometimes in response to attacks against the Israeli people and sometimes preemptively. In this page-turning, eye-opening book, journalist and military analyst Ronen Bergmanโpraised by David Remnick as โarguably [Israelโs] best investigative reporterโโoffers a riveting inside account of the targeted killing programs: their successes, their failures, and the moral and political price exacted on the men and women who approved and carried out the missions. Bergman has gained the exceedingly rare cooperation of many current and former members of the Israeli government, including Prime Ministers Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon, and Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as high-level figures in the countryโs military and intelligence services: the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Mossad (the worldโs most feared intelligence agency), Caesarea (a โMossad within the Mossadโ that carries out attacks on the highest-value targets), and the Shin Bet (an internal security service that implemented the largest targeted assassination campaign ever, in order to stop what had once appeared to be unstoppable: suicide terrorism). Including never-before-reported, behind-the-curtain accounts of key operations, and based on hundreds of on-the-record interviews and thousands of files to which Bergman has gotten exclusive access over his decades of reporting, Rise and Kill First brings us deep into the heart of Israelโs most secret activities. Bergman traces, from statehood to the present, the gripping events and thorny ethical questions underlying Israelโs targeted killing campaign, which has shaped the Israeli nation, the Middle East, and the larger world. Review: Israeli Eliminations - The Middle East and the Arab - Israeli conflict have gone on seemingly forever. This is the first book I have read on that subject. What I like about it foremost is the detail and background on operations. The author gives a lot of political information on various Israeli administrations and their individual motivations and strategies. Itโs a fascinating, thoroughly researched book. Itโs educational especially if you havenโt read much on the subjects of the assassinations, the organizations, intel gathering, along with the process and approval steps. Excellent book! Review: Unbelievable and exceptional - I didn't know the history of Israel all that well, however, this book gave me insight that was amazing. Freedom is not free and is not always moral. There are no lilly white Countries and sometimes the ends justify the means and sometimes they don't. We live in a vast grey area.

A Nation Forged in Blood
Thereโs not really a ton of nuance or mystery in Rise and Kill First. It is exactly what it says it is on the front cover: A secret history of Israelโs targeted killing program. Itโs just six hundred pages of various operations. Many of these operations were successful, but the author has also included several notable failures and missteps and how these actions have changed the practices of Israelโs much feared targeted killing apparatus. The killing starts early and often. It is an odd feeling as the reader throughout because with few notable exceptions, you know that the target is going to be killed, but Bergman manages to keep it interesting by writing in a detailed, yet cinematic style where the reader can almost picture step by step the action going down. This is a special quality that doesnโt happen with many books of this type. The book never dragged and always kept me engaged despite itโs less than savory subject matter. This is the type of book that one creates when the country has been under threat since day one, but it is a whole lot deeper than [plot to damage Israel, target plotter, kill him]. Itโs a human story with loves, hates, passion, successes and failures that I wasnโt expecting when I picked it up.

Amazing yet terrifying read
Iโve known about the Israeli targeted assignations, but never the size and breadth them. This book brought to light the many reasons why the Mossad, and Israeli intelligence as a whole, is so revered and feared. Reading this book also brought to light a lot of understanding of current events and how many of the leaders of Israel, much like other countries, get recycled. Often not for the good of the country. At the end of this book itโs hard to decide whether I feel sorry for Israelis, the Palestinians, both, or neither. They both seem hell bent on destroying each other, yet as this book, and current events show, continue recreate the cycles of hate through new generations. Either way, amazing book, well written, exciting, and certainly well worth the read.

The complete history of Israel
I am not Jewish, but my wife is. I really enjoyed this book because it gave me the complete history of Israel from 2000 years ago and up to now. Description of different targeted killings and operations whether they went good or bad was with such detail, that, I was so fascinated I couldnโt put the book down. Even now, the Prime Minister of Israel is exactly what Ronan said that he is. I really hope that the war gets over soon and Palestine has its own state. Dagan was right when he said that a 2 State Resolution is the only way to end the war. And Israel has to stay out of the new state of Palestine if there is to be any peace at all , I think. I donโt read many books, but once I started this book I couldnโt wait to get home from work to read more,it was unbelievably written. My thanks to Ronen Bergman And Lawrence OโDonnell because thatโs where I saw Ron Bergman first on the Lawrence. OโDonnell show.

Compelling, Unflinching, Essential
Raise and Kill First by Ronen Bergman is a powerful work of investigative journalism. Meticulously researched and deeply gripping, it offers rare insight into Israelโs targeted killing program and the moral, strategic, and human consequences behind it. Balanced, thoughtful, and impossible to put down, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in intelligence, geopolitics, and modern history.

This book was one of the finest accounts of a dark history that I have ever ...
This book was one of the finest accounts of a dark history that I have ever read. The author does explain why the Israelis found it necessary to use targeted assassinations for the safety of their people. The emotions that one experiences while reading this book are at times extreme and there are times that you are very proud of what the Isrseliโs were able to accomplish and there were times that you were disappointed in what Israeliโs actually did to defend themselves. I have read many of the other reviews of the book and found statements which I was in total agreement. As I read the book, I feared that this book would become a reference to be used by Israeliโs enemies for decades to come. Only time will tell if my fears are correct. The book is over 700 pages long. I had trouble putting it down because of the quality of the writing and the stories that I was reading. He ends the book chastising the policies and leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, and I do not disagree with his opinions. However, at no time does he ever opine what he would have done differently to make the situation better than it is. The leadership of Israel siged peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan in exchange for land. To this day, Israel has โpeacefulโ relations with both Egypt and Jordan. Israel unilaterally decided to withdraw it settlements from Gaza. In exchange for this conciliatory action, Israel gets rockets and terror tunnels from Gaza. According to some people, the settlements are an obstacle to the peace process in the area. The actions of Hamas in Gaza prove that the settlements had nothing to do with the peace effort. After 638 pages of riveting stories, the author thanks all of those who helped him with this seven-year project. At no time does the author ever acknowledge that life for him and his family has been made safer by the efforts that he so explicitly described in the book. The people he wrote about were left thankless for risking their lives and the personal sacrifices they have made attempting to improve the safety and quality of life for Israeliโs in particular and all Jews around the world. I respect the authors skill and effort, and right to publish this exhausting work. I disrespect the author personally for the potential harm that this book will do to Israel and Jews in the world. I feel the author owes the intelligence forces who he has written about, a sincere apology for not making any mention of the sacrifice and good intentions that these people have made to attempt to protect their country and their people in the acknowledgment section at the end of the book. Interesting and informative
It took me quite a long time to finish this book. Not because it was boring or not worth reading, but because it was very detailed. Thereโs a lot of names mentioned and although the reader is constantly told about the political context of the time each chapter is about, occasionally itโs necessary to go back to the beginning of the chapter and check again what it is about. However, what makes this book worth reading is that itโs extremely informative and allows you to dig dip into Israelโs targeted assassinations. In great detail, numerous operations are described, and at the same time it all fits into the big picture. Since most of the content is based on confidential interviews with (often unnamed) sources and classified documents, itโs not at all clear how accurate the depictions are, especially since the author himself mentions how some sources were trying to deceive him. With that being said, if one accepts that the reader canโt always verify the information itโs incredibly interesting to read the book. Thereโs one last thing Iโd like to mention. The book was originally published and written in Hebrew. I have never seen a book that is that well-translated to English. I seriously havenโt spotted a single mistake, which is unusual for native-English speaking authors, but normally never the case for translated books. The editors did a superb job!

Good long read during WFH
Delivery took 5 weeks. Maybe it was because of the reduced international cargo flight frequency. Anyway, the book finally came in good condition.

Targeted Assassination in the Middle East
This is horrifying. The author is an Israeli journalist who gained the exceedingly rare cooperation of many current and former members of the Israeli government and former members of the Israeli military and intelligence services to write about the targeted assassinations of the supposed enemies of the Israeli state. This includes their successes and their failures. The book covers the entire history of Israel from its pre-state activities to the present. The detail contained in the book is comprehensive; it contains an extensive bibliography and index plus is extensively footnoted. The most eye-opening comment is on the last page of the book, it was made by a former Mossad leader who was approaching the end of his life, came to realise that all of the successes of the assassination program had not realised a more secure future for Israel. That the program was a tactical success and a strategic failure and that the only solution was a two-state solution. The book is not an easy read, it is long and detailed but for anyone with an interest in the Middle East it makes for a better understanding of the forces at play. Highly recommended.
