Excellent RP system that just flows seamlessly no matter what is going on within the game. Character actions, interactions, and unintended reactions both within the party and with the world are just plain fun. Our six person gaming group has enjoyed this immensely with every person finding something to like within the system, and with every character class. Every one of them says its "FUN"! MORE... We have played a handful of sessions now with six seasoned RPer's each with 20-40 years of individual experience with a myriad of systems. The cooperative world-building that a game or campaign which Dungeon World starts with is a breath of fresh air. Each character gets to take part in defining the starting map areas, history, legends, and other details. We will be using this method for some of our other systems as well. Creating a character in the game is fast and easy. We have actually randomly drawn for characters a few time when we play. Each and every person has enjoyed the basic characters included within the game, even with this random draw. The randomness has really created some fun situations and character concepts on the fly. We have also played a few additional classes that we found online which were also a blast. We are going to start a longer term campaign this weekend and now that the players have familiarized themselves with many of the classes, they will be choosing their class. Combat and other gaming play is fast and flows nicely. This system does not have an initiative based turn order which was interesting to try...and it ends up being a marvel to play. I wish other systems were like this! A character simply gets to act, can succeed, partially succeed, or fail. Based on the success of these actions or "moves", the GM's monsters, NPC's, and environments then act or make a "move". I cannot say enough about how well this flows in actual gameplay and how fun it is! Custom "moves" are fun and easy to create. Magic, monsters, and the environment can flow within the game with some imaginative players. I have been a regular GM since the beginning of role-playing games with the one that started it all back in 1974. This game will teach you new things about how to run a game and make it more fun. If you're a player, it will teach you new things about your role. Dungeon World has provided this GM with some exceptional and creative new tools and methods to bring to our table no matter what game we play. For that, I sincerely thank the authors. If you want something that is not too complex to play, but is extremely conducive to quality role-playing interaction, this is the game. Simply put, it puts the ROLE back into ROLE-PLAY. Review: Fun game using PBTA system - This is a tabletop RPG in the tradition of D&D (dungeon crawling, hacking and slashing, etc.). It uses a system from another game called Powered By the Apocalypse (PBTA). It is less rules heavy than its more cumbersome cousin and is more of a story driven RPG. It is hella fun and simple to learn. This sourcebook is very well written.

Great, easy to learn pen and paper game
Great, easy to learn pen and paper game, perfect for someone just getting into the world of tabletop gaming. The instruction manual was straightforward, and a great read. I could barely put the book down the first time I went through it! Without any prior gaming experience, I was able to run a campaign with 5 friends in a week or so. Dungeon World seems to be built upon making the rules seem to be secondary to the fun, storytelling side of the game. If we made a mistake during the game, we wove it into the story and did not let it disrupt the adventure. Pros: -Amazingly fun game -Easy to learn and execute, even within a short time frame. -Endless worlds to explore and create Cons: -The book has a decent amount of Examples illustrating specific mechanisms, but a longer, more complete example might be nice. Please, if you are thinking about playing a pen and paper RPG but are intimidated by the rules of D&D and Pathfinder, I strongly urge you to pick this up. I am so glad I did.

An incredible "fiction-first" take on classic Dungeons & Dragons-style adventuring
Dungeon World remains a masterclass in game design, if for no other reason than the Gamemastering section of the book. But really, almost everything else is extremely good, too. It takes the Apocalypse World system (A.K.A. Powered by the Apocalypse or "PbtA") and applies it to classic Dungeons & Dragons-style adventuring, so you get all the tools you need to run the classic race/class combinations, trudge through dungeons looking for loot, or adventure across the wilderness to find new tombs to explore. Good stuff. It's marred only by being a bit too meaty in each class (called Playbooks in this game): there are so many individualized moves (which are kind of like Actions mixed with Feats and Spells when applicable) that a significant amount of duplication or corner-case situations arise. Pros: *Amazing Gamemastering chapter applicable to almost all RPGs, but especially D&D-style fantasy games. *From the GM chapter, antagonistic Fronts and Gamemaster Agenda, Principles, and Moves are awesome. *Also from that chapter, the settlement rules are simple, straightforward, and yet very evocative, making them great to port to other game systems. *Outside of the GM stuff, the entire discussion of player agenda, and how Playbook moves are created are super-useful. *The game covers everything you'd want from a D&D experience in a more narrative style: interaction, exploration, combat, camping, downtime activities, simplified encumbrance, and so on. Cons *The classes have so many moves that you'll find a decent amount of duplication in some classes, plus you'll find weird corner cases ("This class' version of the Move does this extra thing, but that other class' doesn't because reasons.") *Trying to cover everything sometimes means that some things feel like they aren't covered well enough: travel and ration expenditure sometimes feel a little barebones compared to the meat of the class Playbooks, so it's not quite striking a good balance in where there are lots of rules versus where there are abstractions.

More Narrative Driven, Great For 1st Time DM's
Great for if you are a first time DM wanting to jump in and take your own jab at running a game or campaign. More focused on narrative rather than lots of dice rolling with lower numbers. After using the book several times as a reference I have found that I can even stream line in game events faster for certain players. I have used it as a base for a few homebrew games over the years. Good purchase.

I remember a feeling when the D&D 3rd edition came out and the wow-effect when comparing the rules to those in the 2nd ed. How marvelously simple they seemed! Recently started to think if the rules could even be more simple while the not compromising the atmosphere or role playing aspects and came across Dungeon World and now I am preparing an adventure to test it. So far though, I love the book! More simple moves-system instead of intricate Skills+Feats, no initiatives and much less rolling in combat, fronts for the GM to manage the game, a lot of tips and examples to name a few things. But there are (as expected) a lot of familiar things as well. So all-in-all, I am very excited! Still, the system is not simple enough to play with small children. So for that purpose I am also considering Basic Fantasy.

The book is beautiful, easy to hold (smaller than A4), with an easy-to-read font and layout. This contains everything you need (player creation, dm guide, monsters) to start playing ASAP. At 408 pages, it's quite thick and beefy. My sole issue with this purchase is the condition it came in. Two front edges have been crumpled, presumably from banging around in a box during shipping. The front cover also doesn't close completely, curling outward from the book.

We were looking for a story-first approach to our improv-based live play podcast. And Dungeon World delivers in spades. We are addicted. So good. And this book is truly solid and a great way to learn the system! And to start playing right away!
