Why so many negative reviews?

I noticed that too. We have this exact thermometer and at first we really liked it and believed it was accurate. However, my daughter had a fever once and 2 other thermometers we had said 100.4 F and 100.6 F and the Vicks SpeedRead said 98.1 F. So, I don’t think it’s very accurate. Unreliable!

When it says low on it does this indicates the battery is low?

It's amazing how many people make this comment and it's not true. A little bit of reading or a simple search shows it's the air temp and not battery condition. Press at the On button. When the self-test is done in a couple seconds, display says "Lo." Stick it under your tongue and you bet a beep in 6-7 seconds with y9ur temp.

I used 3 & the others were .2 degrees apart, this read 1 degree higher. Does it read high?

If you are getting a reading that is a full 1 degree different from THREE others, I'd say return it. Get another brand. Can't tell if mine was high or low, mine was in the ballpark but a little inconsistent. Took my temperature 3 times in about 2 minutes. Got readings of 98.0, 97.7, 97.8, This is "close enough" but I'd expected better. FYI My temperature is always in the 97+ range so that is not the issue.
