Are the gears in side plastic or metal?

The gears are metal, it is a well built sharpener. I took it apart just to see what was inside and to my surprise it was pretty rigid

Could it do bigger pencils?

It works with pencil with diameter of 6.5-8mm. Please check the largest diameter of your pencils before purchase to ensure the fitness.

What are the dimensions of the actual product, not the packaging size?

I would say the sharpener itself is approx. 3 x 6
