Works to connect SSD to iPod A1099 (iPod photo).

I have a 10 year old A1099 (60GB iPod Photo). After 10 years, the drive finally gave the click of death too many times (I'd resurrected it before by throwing it in the freezer for a few minutes and on a couple of occasions striking it against the floor a couple of times to get a drive head dislodged from where it was stuck. The time had come though to finally replace the drive. I had an 80gb SSD pulled from an original Macbook.I had three small issues using this cable:1. There is a little plastic piece that serves as a guide into the connector on the original iPod drive. I had to cut most of that off so the cables would join firmly.2. The iPod cable actually has only 46 pins and you may need to flip the cable/drive around to connect it the right way (you should see the folder/ipod-support icon).3. There isn't a lot of space in the ipod case with this additional cable and I had to twist the cables a bit to get everything to fit. In the end though, everything feels quite locked into place so there are no bits moving around. All in all a successful drive replacement and I now have a 75GB ssd in my iPod which will hopefully extend its life another 10 years. The hard drive slot on the actual iPod board is a ZIF connector and I'd bought a ZIF cable as well, but it was pooor quality a little too thick to go into either slot. So I'm using the original ZIF to 46 pin female connector and then have this cable attached to give me another ZIF cable end point.

Works great

Worked great to install a Toshiba SSD in an old Sony Vaio X505. Probably not everyone's use case but it worked for what I needed it to. :-)

Worked great. I had an old

Worked great. I had an old, 4th generation iPod with a dead heard drive. I bought a new solid state drive, but didn't realize that the connection was different until I opened up my iPod. I bought this and it works great. Quick note: There's a little notch on both sides of plastic piece. I had to take a pocket knife and cut off one of the notches so that it would fit. No big deal. My old iPod now works great!

I used this to turn my old iPod into a 500gb beast of a media player. This is a key piece to converting the connection on the board to fit with a zif to msata adaptor.

Very useful for using new storage media in older iPods

I bought this adapter from another source. The seller was Micro SATA Cables, so it appears to be the same product. Same price. Glad to see I have more than one choice for sourcing; I may be buying a few more. This simple adapter works great with 4th gen iPod. Mine has a monochrome screen, so it's even older than the color-screen 4th gen "iPod photo." I first tested it with a 30GB 1.8-inch hard drive (from a 5th gen "video" iPod), which uses the "40-pin ZIF" connector. Older iPods (like my 4th gen) use the "50-pin" connector, hence the need for this adapter. Those newer (ZIF) hard drives are the same width (and thickness), but they're about 1/4-inch shorter (in longest dimension). This is convenient, because that bit of excess space provides just enough room for this adapter to fit between the iPod's (50-pin) connection point and the hard drive's (ZIF) connection point. The orangish portion of adapter is a flexible ribbon; it needs to be bent into an "S" shape. The adapter plus newer hard drive fits in the space occupied by the older stock drive.NOTE: iPod hard drives come in two thicknesses, based on the number of platters (one or two). A "thick" hard drive does not fit in a "thin" iPod, and that has nothing to do with this adapter.I also tested this adapter with the "iFlash" converter, used for replacing a faulty hard drive in iPod with a commonly-available Compact Flash card (or other type of solid-state storage media such as SD card). The web site iFlash.xyz has information. The iFlash adapter is designed specifically for newer iPods (5th gen and later) that use ZIF hard drives. However, I'm now able to use iFlash (which has a ZIF connector) in my older 4th gen iPod, using this Micro SATA Cables adapter. The Compact Flash card I used with iFlash is 64GB (formatted capacity just under 60GB), which is more than three times my iPod's original capacity. There are other adapters that go directly from my iPod's connector to Compact Flash, but they often don't work reliably at 64GB. iFlash works reliably at 64GB, and it would be interesting to see if I can go even higher (in my ancient iPod from 2004).There are a few confusing things. One is the plastic "tabs" that extend out from the ends of the black 50-pin connector. They don't serve a purpose when used in an iPod, and actually block proper connection. I snipped them off using a nail clipper. The other confusing point is correct orientation of the adapter's connectors; they can connect in either direction. The iFlash.xyz web site (which also offers this type of adapter) has a picture that is very helpful in connecting the adapter properly. It would be nice if Micro SATA Cables provided a simple "how-to" diagram with this adapter.NOTE: After connecting adapter to iPod, orient hard drive so its ZIF connector is on BOTTOM (inner) surface. On iFlash's board, its ZIF connector is on TOP surface.
