Can you use shavings or little bits of charcoal instead of wood shavings?

This smoker works great but I'm not sure if would be good with charcoal. The containers of wood chips I bought with this smoker will last me more than my lifetime - maybe even my grandchildren.

What material is the fuel tank made of? Plastic or metal?

Seem and sound like metal. I'm sure it's not iron cause a magnet din't stick on. I used the Wancle Smoking Gun many time and the fabric well resisted for burning a little quatity of wood light for 2 to 4 minutes. I light the wood with a bbq lighter. You don't neeed more for an indor gunsmoked like this. Probably it's not recommended to use a Culinary Butane Torch wich give 2500 F... It's a good one, I recommended !
