Japanese Taupe Quilts: 125 Blocks in Calm and Neutral Colors

This book makes me want to stop everything else and make quilt blocks. Each block has a photo of an actual fabric block, a line diagram, a cutting list, instructions for constructing the block, and a note about the inspiration for the design. The necessary pattern shapes are full size and do not need to be enlarged. The book begins with a description of Japanese textiles and quilt-making, followed by a tutorial about tools and techniques. I'd read it even if I weren't getting ready to make blocks.

I bought this as a gift for a quilting friend and was able to see it after she opened her gift. There are so many great ideas to inspire any quilter, the photos are excellent and the organization of this book is phenomenal. My friend was very happy with this. I have Susan Briscoe's other quilt book (as does my friend) --Japanese Quilt Books--and both books are the same high quality.

This book essentially consists of two parts: * Materials, tools and techniques in which is considered fabric, equipment, cutting, piecing, applique, embellishment and finishing; and * Block directory in which is considered choosing blocks. patchwork blocks, applique blocks and combined technique blocks. In addition the templates are included. According to my wife - the quilter - Japanese Taupe Quilts is a wonderful extension to Japanese Quilt Blocks by the same author. The instructions are clear and well illustrated, with the principle of "mix and match" being well explained. She particularly liked the projects in which uses for the blocks (e.g. in a bag, wall hanging, pillow or table runner) for purposes other than quilts were develkoped.

A little under half the blocks are common quilt blocks which have been adapted slightly. The other new blocks are heavy into applique. I bought the book for the new quilt blocks and was very pleased with the selection. All the blocks are worked in browns, grays, golds and taupes giving a defferent view point from the usual brightly colored American quilts. The how to instructions were good but nothing out of the ordinary. There were 6 projects that use more applique than piece techniques.

I have been in love with Japanese Taupe Fabrics for several years. I have painstakingly collected them for some time now and have a nice collection. I've been waiting for a worthy project and am delighted that there is now a beautiful book presented by Susan Briscoe to inspire me to start cutting into my beautiful collection.

THIS BOOK IS ABOVE AND BEYOND ANY OTHERS! YOU HAVE WONDERFUL BLOCKS TO GO THRU AND T R Y TO DECIDE WHICH ONE TO MAKEUP. THE DIRECTIONS FOR EACH BLOCK IS VERY TO THE POINT AND EXTREMELY EASY TO FOLLOW. I PERSONALLY HAVE A HARD TIME WITH PATTERNS, BUT THEIR ARE NO WORDS TO GET IN THE WAY! THESE BLOCKS DON'T HAVE TO BE LIMITED TO JAPANESE FABRICS OR ITEMS. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS IN THEIR LIBRARY!!

I had seen this book that a friend had, and I love the way the book is put together. There are a variety of methods to make blocks, and this includes from easy to complicated. As far as the Taupe goes, these are not colors that you think of as oriental and they are so beautiful.
