Nifty little tool. Cut styro-foam like butter!
This thing is the best! I used it to cut large boards of styro-foam for a school project. I was a bit nervous, but it worked good and cut through the foam very smoothly. It is absolutely perfect for cutting anything detailed and getting into small corners. Tips: You have to go slowly... have patience. It melts the foam so let it do it's work and don't drag it through There will be a smell, so proceed carefully. You are melting styro-foam by the way. Try opening a window and trying not to breath in any smoke directly It get's super HOT. Keep kids away and make sure it stays on the stand while it heats. Keep it away from anything that could melt. Enjoy!

Perfect for free hand foam carving - I'll use this more than I use my bow cutter now on the small stuff!
It does exactly what it says it will do, and does it well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the heat level is not adjustable, and some foams have different melting points. I read another comment where the user complained because it flexed too much. You don't want it to flex at all! Let it dictate the speed of your cut - gravity will set the speed of the cut perfectly, and if you are cutting freehand, just go as fast as the foam will cut (melt) without putting a lot of pressure on it, and not so slow you get a huge kerf. The heating element is fragile also, so you do not want to knock it around!

Design Flaw
Would be a perfect tool if it was manufactured with better design. It is too cheaply made to justify price. The brass colored crimp holds the metal wand in place. It is paper thin and easily cracks under even slight pressure. The product worked beautifully for ten minutes cutting cleanly and smoothly through 1" styrofoam sheets a variety of free form shapes for model building. Then that paper thin crimp snapped and that was that. I just used a soldering iron instead. Heavier duty that I needed but it's not in danger of breaking easily. Too bad they don't sell longer tips for soldering iron. All in all this styrofoam tool was a waste of money. With a better build design this would have been an extraordinary useful tool. It's very annoying it was manufactured with such an obviously and glaring design flaw. All they needed was a thicker crimp tube, about five cents more per unit for better material and these would be fantastic.

Does what it is supposed to.
I wanted to build a background for my Christmas Village homes. I found some large pieces of foam and needed a way to cut it. This does not work for large pieces (say 3 or 4 inches wide) of styrofoam if you want to cut them in half. This does work great for making designs in the foam or for cutting small pieces. It is easy to use. The cord is long enough that you can stretch it out and reach foam away from the cord, but the cord is small enough that you won't be tripping over it. I used this to cut more than one piece of foam and I have been happy with it.

Works well but short lived
I was sceptical at first due to the number of bad reviews but ordered it anyway. After plugging in the Styro Wonder, I was pleasantly surprised. It cut trough 1" dense Styrofoam with relative ease. You will need to be patient and it does help if you move the cutter in and out while cutting. I noticed it does work better if you clean the wand every once in a while during use. I did this by gently scraping off the melted foam on an edge of wood or stone. Unfortunately, after about a few hours of use, the wand broke (literally snapped) near the handle. The metal had changed colour over time, so I can only conclude that the heat cycling had made the metal somewhat brittle. Overall decent product, I just wish it would have lasted longer. I got about 15-20 ft of cuts out of it before it broke

I was EASILY able to make holes and maneuver to make small ...
I purchased this foam cutter to cut through the big insulation foam boards that you can get at your local hardware store. The foam boards are 24"x48"x1.5". My intention was to carve the foam into detailed letters and drawings for decorations and whatnot. Because the cutter is a probe design and not a bow cutter, I was EASILY able to make holes and maneuver to make small perforations! The amount of heat generated by this cutter is good enough to melt through foam like a hot knife through FROZEN butter. I say this because as you perform long continuous cuts, the resistance increases because the foam is passively cooling the blade. But to solve this, one must use a lot of patience and a little leverage. I found it easier to place the cutter perpendicular on a scrap piece of cardboard and just push the foam through the knife like a stationary foam cutter. I have to say, I was looking for a foam cutter for 2-3 weeks straight . I'm definitely happy with this one. Price + probe design + constant power source, I'd have to say it's good for any amateur hobbyist or even semi professional etsy'er. The only drawback is the cable is a bit short, meaning you have to set your desk or work station right next to an outlet. But fortunately, the adapter doesn't have a grounding pin so you can use one of those cheap 2 hole extension cables to increase the reach.

Not durable, worked though
I needed to make a portrait frame out of foam, and this worked well. The major drawback is it's so flimsy, you have to treat it like thin glass. I managed to finish most of my project before it broke, however lost some time because of the build quality and inefficiency. The problem is the heating element is crimped at the end, where it connects to the device you hold. This spot is a weak point because it gets hot over and over and it was crimped in place. It should have some sort of a housing to protect this joint and be heat tolerant but that is just my take on the design flaw. I would not recommend this to others and would not purchase it again, simply due to durability.

Good product but a bit fragile
I really like this thing, although I broke it on the first day. It heats up fast, the cord seemed to be plenty long. It's got a neat little stand attached to the wand. I used it to cut thru 1" builder's foam, which may be the outside of the product's ability. I am sure that it would be a great tool for 1/2" and less. Take it easy, go slow, don't let it fall off the table. I will seek another product that is a bit heavier duty.

Broke with 10 minutes
I used this cutter to cut straight lines in 2" foam and it worked well, although slowly. However after the first 10 minutes of use it stopped working. Disassembling the unit and replacing the hot and neutral wires, as some have tried here, did not work for me, and the problem seems to be in the heating element. Enough reviewers here have had similar problems that I recommend you stay away from this product.
