It's good but......

Background----------I'll start by saying I'm no stranger to Android TV boxes. I've owned two Logictech Revues (which mysteriously bricked within a week of each other, which were purchased and powered on a week apart, hmmmmm), and an Android TV stick which has a lousy WiFi signal - which is why I purchased the UT1.GoogleTV vs. non-GoogleTV-------------------------The Revue registers itself as a GoogleTV device, thus when shopping at the store, apps that are targeted only for GTV are available for it. When I switched to the Android stick (a generic Chinese device) it registered itself as a phone. To my surprise, I could not download purchases GTV apps. Apps such as X-Navi which provided two paid versions of the same thing. Writing the developer got me nowhere. sigh. The UT1 registers itself as a tablet. Okay, so the apps I purchased under the Android stick were still available. Whew! The downside to this device not registering as a GoogleTV device is I can no longer target my big screen TV to play Youtube videos using my Galaxy table. The UT1 does not allow itself to be registered as a TV device (such as the Revue) so my table simply doesn't see it as a target-able device. This is by far a small thing, but annoying to have it go away. The flip side is that GoogleTV devices have less apps targeted to them and some apps aren't available for GTV devices. That's a huge minus for GTV so this makes the UT1 better than the Revue in this area.Stability----------The first thing I noticed was the long boot time. Okay, no biggie. My Galaxy 10.1 tablet takes just as long. It's not really that long and ho often do you turn off this thing anyway. Well, turns out more than I expected.Lockups are frequent enough to piss me off. Sometimes it hangs for long periods and then recovers. Something it just gets really slow. I installed Android Assistant (18 features) and that seemed to help. Only problem now is that I can't access the menu for the app because the UT1 does not show the bottom bar and thus the menu icon (the horizontal line block thingy). So there's no way to set up automatic cleaning of memory - a sweet feature. (Update: The provided remote control has a menu button which allows access to the application's menu. Whew!)Connectivity------------Because I'm looking for a new audio receiver, I'm using the optical out for audio and the HDMI for video only. I'm happy to report it works fine and no sync issues that I can see. Unfortunately I have yet to see my current receiver switch into Dolby Digital mode. Not sure what's going on here. Wouldn't the device always be outputting DD all the time and non-DD content would simply be upverted to DD? sigh. The wireless signal is definitely better than my Android stick device. The Ethernet connectivity works as expected at 100Mb. Gigabit would have been nice to see. Some may argue that I don't need Gb on this device. But when you consider this device could be streaming out to multiple recipients and also taking in a stream (all HD), the extra bandwidth would be nice to have.I don't use WiFi anymore but it does work much better than the generic stick with it's tiny internal antenna. LAN Ethernet is fast (100Mb). I actually have both turned on. Seems some location stuff won't work without Wifi. Not sure what that's about, or maybe I just read it wrong. meh.Memory------The extra memory (2GB mem and 8GB nan) is so much better than the tiny tiny tiny chunk you get with the Revue or generic TV stick (512MB, 2GB). One thing that helps is to uninstall all the crap apps by selecting to uninstall updates (some apps go from 7MB down to 500KB) and then disable the app. Worked for my phone too. ;-)Custom Launcher and other Gripes---------------------------------The custom launcher screen sucks. Plain and simple. ADW works nicely in its place. Whew! The lack of a status bar at the top or a menu bar at the bottom is a major pain in the ars. Why the designers felt it necessary to remove this when it could simply be hidden baffles me. One, I like the time on my screen. The doesn't seem to be any notifications for things like alarms. I can't turn off the alarm if I can access the status or menu bars. My message to the designers, don't mess with what works! Leave it alone. My table works just fine, so should the TV device. sigh.Summary--------All in all, the UT1 is a decent box. Lots of memory, plays videos very well (1080p no problem), and is best used with a mouse with a wheel. The air mouse/keyboard thing I bought with it was a complete waste of money. Hated it!Recommendation--------------I would normally recommend this to my friends but there is another box just like this one with one antenna, same specs, NO custom launcher, and costs $10/$20 less ( B00EAGUXA2  So, I'm buying a couple of those instead of a UT1. With ADW and other launchers, there just isn't a need for a custom launcher for experienced users. But for a newbie to Android TV boxes, the custom UT1 launcher app might be a welcome thing - until they tire of it.Extra-----Oh yeah, the included remote (not the air remote) is okay. It works.....just not with every app and not perfect every time (like the Revue keyboard did with it's touchpad). I would recommend getting a wireless mouse with a wheel (for scrolling lists) and the logitech wireless keyboard touch keyboard ( B005DKZTMG
