I am looking for a good lens that I can use to take indoor hockey pictures. Would anyone recommend this lens for this purpose

Depends on the lighting. The reach is perfect, but if lighting is deem you might need to go to a 70-200 2.8 instead. I have used this sense for gymnastics, but the lighting in Gyms is always very bad. Hockey might be better.

Is this lens compatible with the 70D?

Yes it is fully compatible. Zoom range is based off of full frame sensors (35mm equivalent)The 70D APS-C sensor has a crop factor of 1.6x giving the lens a equivalent to 160-640mm
