Is this a great lens to bring on safari? Is it too cumbersome? I have a nikon D810. Thank you in advance for your feedback! I appreciate your help.

YES, Here is why. This is my most used lens.  I am on my second one in well over 10 years..  It takes very good pictures. It is reasonable fast. I certainly would NOT use it for portraits .  or high-end magazine shoots.  It is very heavy and large.  I carry it with a shoulder strap While riding a motorcycle at speeds as slow as 5 PPH and as fast as  80 MPH+ , I have won a a few Armature contests  with some of my in motion pictures, i Took while flying down the road on my motorcycle, in the white mountains, and on the Tail of the Dragon. as well as the Swiss Alps and most of Europe.    Again, for the money and the ability to get pictures at a very long distance, It is worth the money...If you can handle the weight on your shoulder.
AGAIN.  This is NOT a high quality  portrait lens. And it is HEAVY, So do not plan an all day shoot unless you can take the weight on your shoulder.

I have a Nikon D5100 will this work on my camera ?

Yes but keep in mind the DX Sensor will give you a field of view 75mm-750mm. I use it on my D3s and D800 - it's focus is very zippy almost as fast as my 70-200mm VR1 - The HSM (Hypersonic Motor) will work with your D5100 since your camera body does not have a built-in focus motor.

Presuming that you order this lens with a Canon mount, it is my belief that it would work with a  Canon 70D. I own this lens and have used it both on my Canon 5DIII and my Canon 7DII.  However, I think Sigma's  150-600mm F5-6.3 Contemporary is a better lens for a variety of reasons.  If you could afford the Sports version, even better, but if you were spending that much you might want to think about a Canon 100-400 (newest version) and a 1.4 teleconverter.   I have not been happy with the Sigma 50-500.  At the 50 end it is useless for all intents and purposes.  At the opposite end, the lens is generously called 500mm.  It is my impression that its maximum range is around 470mm.  Also, it is built on older technology than the 150-600.  Its autofocus is slow and when you move to the larger magnifications you quickly step up to higher F-stops where the ability of the lens to focus quickly is even more limited.  That said, I have seen some great photos taken with this lens, but that is not an experience I have had.  A final note, Canon is reported to be releasing a 200-600 non-L lens in 2017 that will be priced below the new 100-400L.  If you can wait, this might be a solution for you.

Is this lens 740.00 better than the Sigma 150-500 lens

For me, I have preferred it over 150-500 as it starts from 50mm rather than 150mm.
