How does this possibility direct connect?

It comes with a 1.5" tailpiece which you can use to connect to the sink strainer. It's not really "direct connect", but everything is included to connect it to the sink strainer with as short a connection as possible. If you want a longer connection, you will need to supply your own tailpiece.

Will a garden hose fit over the barbed fitting?

Probably if it's a 3/4 inch hose 5/8 I think would be too small but might squeeze on
