Ecolink Intelligent Technology Z-Wave Pet Immunity Motion Detector with Pet Immunity, White (PIRZWAVE2-ECO)

I've had this working now for about a month. So far I have no issues with the detector, It seems to be well built and detects motion with no false detects or non-detect issues. Sensitivity is adequate, it has a jumper setting (see picture) for no-pet, small pet and large pet.. It also has a jumper for motion reset, which sets the default time to reset after motion is detected from 4 minutes to 5 seconds for testing. By default once motion is detected it will be four minutes before it can trigger again. It added fine to Wink by putting Hub in inclusion mode (Add Product > Sensors > Z-Wave sensor) then motion detector in inclusion mode (pull tab on battery or paper clip in small round hole in back). As others have said it detects motion and will send e-mails and/or texts. You can set up a schedule as to when it alarms, such as only alerting from midnight to 7 am as an example. I set it up to turn on a light, but as others have said Wink has no way to turn off the light. The robot functionality in Wink leaves something to be desired. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future update.This is not a Ecolink problem, this is a Wink problem. Also another thing I would like Wink to do is be able to group these devices so I can turn them on/off as a group. Example: Currently if I want to turn on 8 motion detectors when I leave the house I have to drill down into 8 devices and turn them on/off individually. This takes WAY to much time. As said earlier, Wink issue not Ecolink. As soon as Wink upgrades their robot software I will buy more. But as the software exists today (again, wink issue) adding and managing motion sensors is not implemented well enough to justify buying more of these. [7/31/2015 Update] Robots on Wink now work to turn things on if motion detected and off if inactive for X amount of time. So, I can finally recommend for Wink users. [11/2/2015) I was holding this down to four stars due to a WINK problem not EcoLink, I've increased this to 5 stars now that WINK has fixed their robots and shortcuts to allow me to turn on and off multiple robots from a single shortcut. This means, in effect, that I can turn on (or off) monitoring of multiple motion sensors (or other things) from a single shortcut. So I can finally hit one button to "turn on monitoring" and a single button to "turn off monitoring" making this product MUCH more useful as a whole house monitoring solution.

The "Ecolink Z-Wave PIR Motion Detector, Pet Immune (PIRZWAVE2-ECO)" has been running in my home for just under 5 months and has been doing a bang-up job with little to no complaints by me. It is a standard-sized format Z-Wave enabled motion sensor which I have paired with my Raspberry Pi/Domoticz z-wave home control setup. Pairing was simple: insert the battery and switch your z-wave controller into inclusion mode. It was found immediately with no issues and is reported in Domoticz (OpenZWave) as two separate sensors: the motion sensor and a tamper switch. The tamper switch is simply an on/off switch to advise when the case has been opened. The sensor is corner-mounted in my entry hallway approximately 9 inches (~22.8 cm) from the ceiling and points towards the kitchen/living room area however, as it does have a wide field of view it covers even the bedroom door areas. From its location it points down the hallway and through the galley-style kitchen and on into the dining area with clear line of sight; a total length of approximately 32 feet (~9 3/4 meters). I have the unit set to the highest sensitivity (a simple jumper connection within the unit changes this) which detects even a small movement at the far end of the dining area. Keep in mind the sensor is hard-coded with a 4-minute cycle time meaning it turns on then remains in the current state for 4-minutes before checking again. For me it is no issue however if you are looking for a smaller time frame this is probably not the unit for you. It also reports battery level and after just under 5 months my unit is still reading 99%. Not too shabby. I have my system set up to activate a hall light when movement is detected (only after dark and only between a certain time period) and it works like a charm. There is a slight delay of approximately 1-2 seconds at times though I believe that is due to the large distance between the motion sensor and the Z-Wave controller - the signal needs to be repeated to and from the controller to reach the unit. If I set up a light as a slave device the delay almost completely disappears. Overall, this unit suits my setup almost perfectly and I'll be purchasing a few more in the near future to automate a few more lighting scenarios.

Update: bought some more - they're working great again! Please don't change too much again! Update: After buying dozens of these over the years for various installations, I bought more, the zwave "plus" version, and now they don't work. Apparently they don't send the wakeup command (ever, even after hours of standby, not even when triggered), so the controller fails to identify them (unhandled command class). Oddly, if I open the unit and close it again, it works, probably because at that point it sends the wakeup command - not an option to do this for users every time the controller restarts. This is so disappointing because the previous versions were great, and this is probably one of the main reasons while z-wave will never really succeed - if this is z-wave "plus" and it can't remain compatible with normal z-wave, it's indeed doomed. ---===--- Easy to setup, great battery life, I'm buying more! Update: I did by more, many more! These sensors are fantastic, especially compared to all the other zwave crap out there. Yes, they function well, but they battery life is amazing - after months of reliable operation, battery life only down to 97%. Update: Wish I could give them even more stars. Spring 2015 I purchased four more to put on a family farm in Nebraska, two inside and two outside. The inside ones worked, and are still working, flawlessly. The outside ones I figured to sacrifice as an experiment since they were relatively inexpensive. These sensors were unprotected and exposed to the elements (a full summer of sun, heat, humidity, rain, followed by a winter of brutal freezing cold, sleet, and snow, and now well into summer again). Through this time, for over one year, they worked well. Once in a while, when then weather was an odd combination of hot, windy, and cloudy, I'd get false alerts. One finally quit working recently - turns out the battery was finally dead. Needless to say, I remain impressed - in fact, there's not many products that I've been more please to buy or could recommend as much. Especially for indoor use. Whether I really recommend them for outdoor use depends on your tolerance for a few false alerts and willingness to eventually loose them to the elements. Obviously I do, and will buy more - but for now, just have to easily replace an inexpensive battery.

You have to understand the purpose of this device, if you don't - you'll be like me, writing 3-star reviews. So my expectation was to have this paired with a bunch of switches in places like closets and bathrooms, so the idea is - you walk in, it turns on. You walk out - it turns off. I got three types of Mr. Beam devices - and they work like a charm, but those are not z-wave once integrated with my SmartThings hub. Nope, this is not for lights. Here is a list of issues, why it would not work like that: 1. Four minutes before it starts detecting signal again, back to no motion state. Some reviewers saying this is because it saves battery - hard to believe, my Mr. Beam devices work at least 4 months, yes, there are more batteries, BUT they use them to produce some bright light, not just detection 2. Two-four seconds delay. Not quick enough in my opinion. I ended up using the physical switch, knowing, that I'll have to hang on for a few seconds after walking into the room. 3. When you're still in the restroom, it just turns of lights. OK, I'd expect it to react to me waving why I'm doing what people usually doing in the restrooms - nope. It just... does not turn the lights on. Bummer! Had to get up and kinda dance for it! Hilarious. So I realized, that it's not going to be as good as my non-managed dumb Mr. Beam devices I have in many places in the house, but I've found it a good use - alarm. So I set it up to notify me when nobody's home and motion happens in the house, and it does it perfectly - not reacting to the cat, so no false alarms, reacts quick enough to detect an intruder.

I bought this motion sensor to turn on and off hallway lights. It paired with my Wink hub with no problems. The Wink app let me pair and associate the two hallway GE Link bulbs using a robot. Sensitivity is set with jumpers inside the motion sensor housing. Reset time after motion is four minutes to give long battery life. That works well for my purpose. It would be nice to be able to change the reset time, but that is not supported. There is a test mode that cycles the reset time in 10 seconds. This lets you set and try the motion sensitivity. The Wink hub allows various responses to motion including sending an email. An included bracket lets you mount in a corner or flat on a wall with screws or double sided tape, both included. If using tape, I would get some 3M Command Performance tape that releases without paint or wall damage. Overall, a nice compact unit that was easy to configure without outside help. Work great with Wink. Second purchase - wanted to automate closet light on and off. Put jumper in test mode so there is a ten second delay to send motion. Since the closet has very little traffic, don't think battery life will be a problem. Connects to my Wink hub to control GE Link smart bulb. Also voice controlled by Amazon Echo. In this location, I rarely use voice command. Motion sense is enough. Nice to have dim light at night and bright light during the day using Wink robot logic.

I was hopeful for this product given some of the positive reviews. We're using this in our kitchen to turn on sofit and undercounter lighting when anyone walks in (very cool, btw). We used X10 for years without a problem but really wanted to integrate this into our new SmartHub/Things setup. Installing any Ecolink product is a little frustrating since the instructions are merely: plug it in and follow your controller manufacturer's instructions for adding a device. Well, the SmartThings hub is brilliant but it takes awhile for any Ecolink device to be found and I usually have to unplug and re-plug them in several times to get it to work. This, however, is simply a BATTERY OPERATED stand-alone device so it's a bit more cryptic so had to pop the battery out a few times to get it to work. I finally got it working after replacing battery with a fresh one. The battery it shipped with was dead. Behavior. I set this up to turn on the lights and then off when there is no movement. We expected this sensor to have PIR (ON while motion is in the room). Well it does not PIR so it keeps turning the light off at the end of the timer whether there is motion or not. The sensor simply does not sense again for about 5-10 minutes after the original movement. Not sure how to figure that out. We're going to try to figure it out but without knowing what kind of sensor this is we're probably going to return it or trash it.

WINK Hub compatibility review: This sensor IS compatible with the WINK hub (as of 2/5/2015). To pair it to your system, first go to the wink app then select [ wink hub > settings > z-wave > inclusion mode ] then set the ecolink into inclusion mode (must be after the hub) by inserting the battery or inserting a paperclip into the hole in the back cover. Pairing was a breeze with the WINK hub, detects motion and can trigger a resonce in less then a second, I have it set to turn on porch lights. On the WINK hub this can be used as a robot to only DETECT motion by not the absence of motion, ie it can NOT send a new signal after a time of detecting motion to TURN OFF your lights ect. There are some work arounds (tripper, ifttt) but as of (2/5/2015) WINK has no native timing option in there robots. You could set the light of interest to every (10min or an hour) set its level to the "default state" and then the sensor when tripped would change the light to your programmed setting, then after a period of time and the scheduled program activates it would "reset" the light. General review: Pro's: This product is well built and looks good, (it looks cheap in its picture). It comes with a battery and mounting equipment for both flush on the wall or in a corner (but not able to adjust verticle angle, probably not an issue as it it built to look down). You can set an optinal sensitivity level to ignore small or large pets. Con's: no adjustible positioning arm. Limited choice of a 10 second OR 4 min delay (once motion is detected it will turn off for that long before turning back on and checking for motion). This may or may not matter depending on your application and the program you use to interpret motion signals. Delicate back pannel, use a flat head screw driver and gently push the clip up then pull the back panel away (cautionary not: the equipment board is attached to the back pannel).

I purchased three different motion sensors. The Ecolink as well as SmartThings SmartSense Motion Sensor and Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Multi-Sensor . I did a comparison of the three in my review for the SmartThings motion detector in case you are interested. PRO: The sensitivity of this device can be adjusted and you can get it to exclude small pets. This may allow it to be used in an area where the SmartThings detector would not be suitable. The form factor is small, but larger than the SmartThings and more noticeable in a room. However, many people have motion sensors for their security system so I do not think they look that much out of place. It detects motion from a long distance away and I had no problems pairing it with my SmartThings box. Although, like all of my sensors, it seems to take a few minutes once the device is paired to actually start working properly. I pair the device and then cover it with a towel so it gets no motion for a few minutes. It worked fine after that. CONS: The response from this unit is noticeable slower than the SmartThings motion detector. I paired a light to each sensor and placed the sensors next to each other on a shelf in my closet pointed to the doorway. The light paired to the SmartThings comes on almost immediately and there is a delay of perhaps a second before the other light comes on. I swapped sensor positions to make sure it was not due to where I put the sensors. I really wanted to use the SmartThings sensor in a different location, so I paired all of the lights in the walk in closet to the Ecolink sensor and have been using it for a few days. The delay is such that I walk into the closet and reach for the switch and try to activate it before the lights come on. I am sure I will get used to it, but it is quite a drawback for me. I have ordered a replacement SmartThings sensor to use in this location. OVERALL: The device works and I am sure I would get use to the delay. I am saving the device in case I want to automate the lights in the kitchen where we allow the dogs to have continuous access. This would probably be better in that location. I only took one star off for the delay in activating.

I cannot test this as the unit is not compatible with UK/EU Z-Wave networks. Unfortunately, the frequency was not mentioned in the description when I purchased it. I would buy it if a UK/EU version was available.

It does the job, easy to interface. Using it with a Piper.

Using InControl software, I had it setup to open the lights in the entrance when movement is detected. About one second delay using the cloud connection. Twice it got stuck on "infinite" detection, but reset is pretty straightforward (just open the device and close it again).
