Nexcare 524560 Basal Digital Thermometer

I decided to buy a basal thermometer for the same reason most of you probably are thinking of buying one: to measure my basal body temperature for the purposes of ovulation tracking. I already have a nice, standard digital thermometer that measures out to the tens (.1) place. However, I wanted to buy a basal thermometer because they are supposed to be even more sensitive at detecting changes in bodily temperature, measuring temperatures to the hundredths (.01) place. I bought this particular thermometer because it got decent reviews (apparently 3.5/5 stars for basal thermometers is "decent"!), had backlighting, and seemed basic yet effective enough to suit my needs.Imagine my surprise, then, when I turned this on and discovered that it only takes temperatures out to the tens (.1) place! My $5 digital thermometer does that quite effectively, thank you very much, and happens to beep more quietly and is not a sickly pinkish color to boot! Not only that, but I cannot return this item. $15 down the drain.Thanks, Nexcare, for creating an overpriced, ineffective, mislabeled product.

It is reliable - isn't that what matters most? I use it every morning at the same time to check my basal temperature and I get consistent results that are expected. Yes, it does beep while it's taking your temperature. But when you're half asleep in the dark, it's a nice reassurance that the thermometer is doing its job. The beep is relatively quiet and it does not wake up my husband sleeping next to me. It also isn't rapid - it maybe beeps once every 4-5 seconds. Also, make sure you take your temp at the same time every morning, before getting out of bed or speaking. I set an alarm and I reach over to snooze the alarm and promptly take my temperature. Movement, talking, and different times of day can affect your temp. Make sure you're taking it correctly if you aren't getting consistent results!

We've been charting for years and I can tell you this is far and away the BEST bbt out there. The features that make this thermometer light years ahead of the others is that 1) it is FAST-seriously. 2) It beeps every few seconds to tell you that it is still working-a HUGE deal when you are sleep deprived. 3) It saves the last temperature it took-so when you are sleep deprived you dont have to wake up and write down the number immediately, you can just set it down and forget about it. 4) It lights up. Amazing. Why didnt anyone else think of that? So basically... it goes for me, alarm, turn on, take temperature until it beeps the final (different sound)beep, press the button which turns on the light, look at the temp (so I might remember it in the morning), press the button again & set it down and fall back to sleep. Easy. Lasts forever. I recommend this to anyone who uses NFP and charts. We actually own 3 of these (thanks to our little blessings that have misplaced them from time to time). A good quality product with everything you could want/need in a bbt.

This seems to work well, but the temp is about a degree higher than all the other thermometers I had and tested against. I don't think this matters too much as I am using it to BBT chart and can still notice a rise and fall at the necessary times - just make sure you use it at the start of a new cycle. I was looking for a thermometer that beeps because I keep worrying that I didn't turn it on right and was taking it out to look and make sure it was on, which of course messes up the temp - so this works well as it lets me know it is working. It has a nice continual beep during the process and some rapid beeps at the end to notify you it is done. The beeping is kind of loud but if you hold your hand around it, it muffles it considerably. There is also a nice backlight - this backlight stays off and when it is done just click the button once and it will light up and show your temp.

I've been using this thermometer to track my BBTs for over a month now, and wanted to leave a review since they are always helpful for me when buying something. Overall, this is a good thermometer, but it has taken me some practice to get used to using in a sleepy state. There have been times when I insert too early/ too late after turning it on, and it has taken me a few minutes to get it right on more than one occasion, which obviously could disturb the accuracy of my BBT. HOWEVER, after a couple of weeks, I have become a pro with this thing, and it's a pretty seamless process of hearing alarm, testing, falling back to sleep.The things I like:I LOVE that it beeps every 4 seconds to tell you it's working. Nothing like thinking it is and having it not be. This beep is not crazy loud like people make it out to be. But even if it does wake up your husband... oh well :-) He can go back to sleep just like you probably will. For accuracy, I use this at 5:45am- usually I get up between 6:30am and 7:30am depending on the day, but my last half hour of sleep is usually not very restful, so temping from a good deep sleep is better. It is also good that it beeps when it's done so you know.I like that it has a backlight for easy reading, and it's good to have the memory recall, tooIt seems pretty accurate. Other than when I had a cold so my temps ran warmer for a few days, it's pretty consistent and my temps are within a certain range each phase.I might buy a different brand just to compare, but I am pretty satisfied with this one! If you do want to switch, just remember it's best to switch when starting a new cycle.
