An incredible read, start to finish
This book was simply a masterpiece. I couldn't put it down till the last page. George RR Martin is a king of writing fiction. The book got definitely darker than the last one and the characters making tougher and tougher decisions, facing insurmountable odds, terrible losses, huge armies, but now also the onset of wildlings, magic and the inexorable advance of winter. This is an incredible thriller, with new and shocking developments in each page, and twisted politics and cold-blooded murders and revelations at every turn. The description is so intense and direct that the scenes seem to play out in your head as if you were there, and the grotesque fights and killings leave you feeling horrified. George RR Martin outdoes himself with every book. Can't wait to read the next one.

Great purchase, though came with a minor defect which doesn't hinder reading
Loved the book, though it came with a minor defect. They sent me a violet cover instead of the one posted on Amazon, which is absolutely stunning.

An Amazing Read with an Enticing Epilog
This novel leaves up to the expectations, it does bring in a few surprises which are not present in the TV 📺 series. The way George R. R. Martin establishes a scene is quite astonishing. Enjoyed the book a lot!

" Jaime Lannister sends his regards... "
A voir comment l'aventure évolue dans A Feast for Crows.

Return of the "Fantasy" novel
For many years, I have abandoned the Fantasy genre for lack of brilliancy (alas, no more Zelazny's). However, with Martin's Ice and Fire series, Fantasy can hold its head high again. The IAF world is similar to what one expects of a European type middle ages knights and kings and queens tale but with an extra portion grandeur and intrigue. Fratricide, regicide, betrayal, villainy and alliances, likely and unlikely, characterize the stories within the Story. Like the other books in the series, the narratives contains chapters centering on one character at a time. Often this type of format has high and low points as we are reading chapters with characters that we are more or less interested in. In this last book, as in the others in this series, the characters do not necessarily inspire devout loyalty or revulsion as there seems to be no absolute good or evil, but through the unrelenting amount of action and suspense one is gripped from beginning to end from all aspects of the story. We are only given tantalizing clues as to the "big picture" and must put together the bits and pieces from each character's developing tale. NOT for the faint of heart, the sometimes brutal fates and injustices that occur, especially in this last book, serve only to sharpen our appetites for resolution and satisfaction. Male as well as female characters are thoroughly believable and act of their own accord and motivations, usually not swayed by any sense of greater good or noble purpose. My only complaint is that perhaps the brutality is somewhat overdone, but is certainly in keeping with the force and pace of events. The influence of occult and magic will likely increase in the next installment, but for those looking for more scorcery than swords, this series is definitely not for you. I have abandoned family, job and household this week to read Book 3, parts I and II (in 3 days only!) and am somewhat glad that the next one will not be out until next year. Brilliant and suspenseful writing. I highly recommend these books!

Consistently good quality
Whenever I pick up a book from the A Song of Ice and Fire series, something strange and unusual happens. I read, and I keep reading, and it’s a wrench to stop reading before the final page is turned. I’ve praised George R R Martin’s series before for its deep world-building, authentic character creation, and refreshing unpredictability, so I thought I’d talk about something else this time. Readability. This series has it. George R R Martin truly is a master of the English language. His knowledge is broad enough to add flair to description and keep repetition at bay, but he never succumbs to flooding his work with incoherence. He knows how to construct a sentence so it is both interesting and elegantly simple, creating the sweet spot of literary flow that makes it so easy to read that it’s like the words carry you along like a current. That’s one of the reasons it’s so difficult to put down his books when I pick them up. The fluidity feels to natural that there never quite feels like a good point to put the book down and come back to it later. Another reason is that Martin is a genius of plot structure. The alternate character pov chapters dole out just enough of that character and what’s happening with them to please, but not enough to satisfy, and before you know it the chapter’s over and you’re on to another character, with a strange mixture of thwarted disappointment that it’s now going to be several chapters before you find out what this character does next, and eagerness because now you get to find out what happened to that other character when you left off several chapters ago. Much of the praise I had for A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow applies here, and not just because, as I keep saying, Martin is such a consistently good author – but since this was originally one complete text, the quality is especially consistent between this and part one. Same amazing world, same deft characterisations, same attention to detail, same thoughtful plot. Undoubtedly looking forwards to book four!
