Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses, Premium Fourth Edition

Highly recommended!!I started learning Spanish with this book and I also use a Spanish language app. Having studied through this book it is very comprehensive in its teaching. It covers all the tenses and moods with good examples and lots of exercises to test you. Very well written and easy to understand. I would highly recommend this textbook for anyone wanting learn and understand the Spanish tenses in more detail. However, it can be confusing for the newby to Spanish, like myself, which does require one to revise a number of times most chapters. But if you willing to put in the time and effort, I believe it will add immensely to one's understanding of Spanish tenses and moods.

If you buy only one Spanish workbook, make it this one. Dorothy Richmond writes the very best guide to Spanish verbs I have seen in many years of off and on Spanish study. She introduces each tense with a crystal clear explanation in English of what the tense means and when and how to use it (see photos of the introductory pages for the preterite and imperfect tenses). Unlike many other verb workbooks, she also offers clear and thorough explanations of how to use some of the most essential Spanish words that present challenges to most students, such as the uses of ser versus estar and how to use gustar. Her exercises are presented in thoughtfully graduated units with often whimsical sentences to translate. The publisher also has a smartphone app with some supplemental audio recordings but I have not tried it. If you are studying Spanish, buy this book!

I would give this book six stars if I could. It is extremely helpful. I took Spanish in high school and always found verb conjugations to be the most difficult part. This book breaks down the different tenses and conjugations in a way that is much easier to understand and to remember than how I was taught in school. The exercises at the end of each concept are helpful, too. My Spanish is definitely improving as a result. I'm almost done working my way through this book and plan to buy the Pronouns and Prepositions book in this series next- I hope it's just as good.

Liked that it works extremely well for me after looking through many other conjugation/tenses books. Clear and concise and I like how it's structured, that it goes through all forms of the verbs and the exercises reinforce each lesson. It does require a small amount of prior vocabulary for some of the exercises that is implied. The intent isn't about the vocabulary, it's about using what you just learn about the verb. But that said, the lessons do include most of the new vocabulary you may need to do the exercises. I don't like the companion app advertised as part of the book's learning plan. It has too many errors and spelling mistakes. The book can be used well without the app. This book is my go to grammar/conjugation book and it teaches just enough extra vocabulary, making it complete, but not excessive or burdensome.

It took me a LONG time to work through this. There are tons of exercises that take quite a bit of time to do if you are writing everything out. Actually, that's what makes it so useful, though--it really drills the material in. I'd say this book has a lot more practice than similar texts. The lessons are great at explaining the concepts, very thorough, and a lot of the exercises are comprehensive as you go through them, meaning they include concepts from previous chapters to help prevent forgetting the material. Most books don't do that.Ultimately, there are a lot of similar texts, but this is one of the best of them--especially if you learn best suing a traditional grammar approach to a language (which I most certainly do).

I bought another book (Barrons's 501 Spanish Verbs) BUT --- THIS BOOK IS BETTER for the beginner. I've only had 100 days of every day lessons (via Duolingo) and this book has been a truly valuable asset. It is really helping me understand how some irregular verbs are used. AND it has "workpages" so you can see your problem areas. Truly love it. ALSO that it is in BINDER FORMAT. Very well thought out. And Highly recommend to anyone trying to learn Spanish. It's my foreign language go-to reference book now.

If the various verb tenses and how they conjugate and are used is sometimes a stumbling block, this is a great book to have. The explanations are well written and there are exercises. A great book for someone perhaps trying to brush up on their high school Spanish or like me, who learned it on the streets and not too well. I found it enormously useful.

The book's structure is a perfect fit for me! It would be lovely if they could summarised everything after each chapter tho.
