Q: Is this not a deicer? It seems it only keeps water circulating. My concern is that we get ice on lakes up to 2 ft thick. My pond is 2 feet deep.

Not sure how well it would do on such a shallow pond, my ponds are just over three feet deep. The heating coil is around the tube from the hanging pump that circulates the water up above the ice surface and back down the larger tube. The ice does freeze up to and around the red disc but it seems to work fine in my ponds and is a lot cheaper than the 1500 watt cattle heater I used to use. I now bring my koi inside for the winter because the ice quakes we get killed all my koi in my 5000 gal pond a couple of years ago but my the regular goldfish in my 800 gal don't seem to be affected by the quakes

Q: Do you need to clean it and what is the best way during the season?

Not an easy way to do so. I used it only for a year. Save your money and instead go buy a deicer. No cleaning no worries after that.

Q: Has anyone else had trouble attaching the ice guard to the gas exchanger? Does not want to go together without exerting force- don't want to break it.

hold the gas exchanger in one hand and slide the red ring (float) up so the notches on the float allow the gas exchanger to pass through.Then slide the bottom (ice guard tube) up so the cap engages the bottom of the gas exchanger ,then rotate clockwise to lock it in place.

Q: Does the heater shut off when the water gets above a certain temperature?

No but I only put in when the water starts to freeze it only keeps a 6” hole in the ice open
