What size gap do i need behind the tank with this filter ?

Hanging on the side could be an option if there isn’t much room at the back.

Would this be too much flow for a 50L beta tank?

Yes it will work fine. I have mine on my 30cm cube 27 litre Beta tank. It hangs on the back perfectly, I have corse, medium, fine sponges in the bottom tay. Then Seachem Matrix, Seachem Purigen 100g and lastly Filter wool. I use the spray bar attachment facing forwards at 45 degrees towards the water surface and the inlet open fully to draw water from the tank and the outlet at minimum to reduce the flow. My Betta makes use of the whole water column with ease. The water stays crystal clear and the parameters are all stable. I haven't suffered any spikes or crashes.

What's the wattage please?

This pump is 6W. I bought one for my Axolotl tank and was so impressed I bought one for each of my other 3 tanks.
