Upright Bass Pickup with Flexible Micro-Gooseneck by Myers Pickups

I write very few reviews, but I love to read good ones that are actually helpful. So I will give a bit of background and help. I was given a piezo type pickup by a friend and fellow bassist at my start. Right away I was not a fan. It turned the nuance and complex sounds of my upright to a terrible version of the sounds that come from an electric guitar bass. When I listened to records, the double bass didn't sound like that. When I started playing amplified gigs I became the guy in the band that did the sound and bought the gear. I love to research and buy the perfect product at the best price, and it's become my thing.... and that is what lead me to the Myers pickup. Straight to the point, to get the sound you want out to the Front of House (FOH) you need something to pick up what you hear. A microphone on a stand kinda works, but live shows are not like recording sessions, you move more and the space is tight and loud. I'll admit that standard pickups have the benefit of not feeding back and some sound much better than others, but when I looked into it the prices, the tortured installations and extra gear you need to carry around I was left looking for more. What I like: The Myers pickup is not a pickup in the sense I understand the word. It's just a small microphone that is surprisingly clear across all frequencies and compact. It's simple and works well. Trumpet and Sax mics of the same size tend require a box you wear on your belt tethered to the microphone on your instrument. The beauty of the Myers pickup is that it's designed with simplicity in mind. It comes out of a bag in one piece and sticks right on your bass. It turns on when a 1/4 cable is plugged in. Takes a small hearing aid battery that has lasted me weeks to months. Has a goose neck that you can bend and shape to point in the direction you want. Has a volume knob for quick adjustments and is inexpensive enough that if you lose it or don't like it, you can still pay rent. How to work with it: The signal output to the mixing board is on the quieter side. It's like a quiet microphone when using a cable directly into a 1/4" line level input (similar to they Heil PR22). I would use a 1/4" to XLR adapter or so that your board will boost it with it's internal mic pre-amp. I use mine with an LR Braggs pre-amp which gives me an EQ, DI, Signal Boost, 1/4"amp output and a tuner in one box on the floor. Remember that it is still a microphone and will feedback. Keep the knob at 3/4 of maximum and keep the goose neck near where the sound is. At the moment I have mine positioned 1/4" away from the f-hole. I use 3M Command tape (plastic velcro) on both my bass and the pickup and located it under my bridge between the feet. It stays protected by the bridge when in the bass bag and is solid enough to hold the weight of my cable and the pickup. It took me a while to get to this state but now I get no feedback even when the bass is less than a foot away from a monitor on a loud stage and it sounds like an Acoustic Upright Bass. Who knew this was possible! I've been happy with it. I've been telling all my musician friends and bought a second one for my girlfriend for her washboard. It surprises the sound people every time. Again totally worth it for the sound and simplicity.

It was delivered right away. The instructions could be just a little better when it comes to alternative mountings, but an email to the company was answered immediately like he knew me as a friend. The rubber suction mount didn't stay mounted and kept falling off so I took it off and used the squeeze mount which works well. The sound reproduction is really quite good and sounds very acoustic. It is prone to feedback so you really have to watch placement of your amplifcation. All in all, it is a bargain for the price, works well, the company answers questions fully and immediately, and I can easily recommend it.

Amazing pickup! As a gigging electric bass guitar player of 30 years, I started dabbling in the world of upright basses last year. As a surprise gift to me, my girlfriend googled pickups and selected the Meyers Grip 6 due to its high ratings and reviews. After owning the pickup for a year and just dabbling with it on a borrowed 3/4 upright and my small, Ampeg Practice combo. I got a full sized upright recently and started to get real about playing it. One of the benefits and things I was looking forward to was being able to plug an acoustic upright into my Gallien Krueger amp which I have read and heard over the years as an amazing amp for reproducing upright basses. Couple that with a top rated pickup and it was a sure win! Well, not at first! I had more to learn about pickups in general to get things right, and thankfully the Myers website has an amazing Support page with just the right video content to address a users needs! Very easy to find, to the point and simple. I ended up needing 3 of their videos because I: 1) had a dead battery after over a year of owning and leaving the instrument cable plugged. *no, I did not read the instructions when I first received the pickup to unplug the cable. I knew better since the preamps in my electric basses are the same. Anyhow, Myers has a straight forward video for that. 2) Pickup placement is so important! Over the last year, I’ve basically wetted the suction cup and stuck the pickup on the front where I could place the mic end by the sound hole. How wrong I was! Again, went to their site and there was a video on placement. I removed the suction cup, installed the clip that’s provided with the unit, clipped unit to sound hole with mic facing instrument just under the bridge, and the difference in tone and volume was night and day! I could here the nice upright tones of the D and G strings so much clearer! 3) Even after the battery change and placement following their videos, I still had to crank my amp to get volume. Back to their support page I went where they have a video specifically for low gain/low volume output and address it very clearly with great options. 5 minutes of watching the video, I understood about impedance, and tested it in my PA using an XLR adapter. Huge difference in volume and tone for the better! Now, I understood what I needed to do by the last suggestion on the video to use with my amp which is 1/4” only on its input. I ran out and got an Active DI and an XLR to 1/4” cable to go between the DI and the amp. Plugged them in and the pickup and amp combination is EXACTLY what I was hoping for!! The pickup is amazing and I cannot wait for my band mates to hear the night and day difference between our last rehearsal and now. I’m a technical guy with years of band and sound experience, and I found that I had just a bit more to learn to get what I believe any pickup to work as it’s designed. I am elated that this Myers pickup is what it is billed as on time of the solid support videos they have on their site.

The michrophone is simply amazing! It is unbelievable what sound you can get from such a small thing! The seller has been also very responsive to my questions, so I am very satisfied.

Bought this with a Mogami ultra light cable for my ZT baritone ukulele. Tried it once through a Marshall practice amp and very impressed with clarity of tone replicating the uke. Greggs attention was impressive from the start, answering my questions and guiding me towards the correct pickup for my needs. Just need to locate it in the best position when I have time. If, like me, you don't want to butcher your instrument with drill holes and false electric sound, you'd be hard pressed to beat this pickup. Very inpressed with both performance and service! The best pick up I've found for sound quality and ease of use on my upright double bass. The suction cup though does not hold due to the contour of the bass, but I slid it (suction cup) into the f-hole, pushed it down into the narrow bottom area and works like a charm. Price is high though for what you get - just saying.

While i think this is a good product it did not meet my expectations for use with my double bass. Firstly, one thing i noticed was that the documentation says that you should use a preamp to boost the signal but none of this was mentioned on the video I watched (unless i missed that bit) so when it came to pluggin into an amp the output was really low. Secondly, the small sponge mic cap easily falls off and gets lost in your double bass.Thirdly, the suction cup isn't worth using for any length of time as it looses its suction fairly quickly (it fell off while I was sound checking), best to use the clip that is provided. Lastly, once oyu have a cable plugged in, if you are using the suction cup, you need to be careful you don't pull the pickup off your instrument. I have no doubt this product has a purpose it just wasn't for me. On a positive note customer service was brilliant!
