What's the sound like when it's on?    Is it whisper quiet, wheezy?   Is it easy to tolerate when used on a desk while working or studying?

It's about as loud as you'd expect from a four-inch fan set on low, but a bit lower-pitch, more of an "aaaaaah" tonality than the higher "shhhhhhhh" tonality you'd get from a higher-speed cooling fan. For me pretty easy to ignore when I'm working (reading, writing), although I do turn if off when I'm on the phone. This is with it pretty close by, just at the end of arm's reach from me. Maybe the same as a quiet car on the highway, or a laptop CPU fan at full speed.

Can I leave this plugged in all day?

It is designed for that; however, I would not recommend leaving it unattended. 
I will not leave this one unattended, meaning that I am, at the minimum, at home.

I am guessing that you are worried about safety, so I will address the issue of safety:  
A safer heater would be an oil-filled electric with a timer and a thermostat and that has three levels: 
500, 1000, 1500Watts; 
why is this type of heater safer? 
Because they dissipate heat across a much wider surface area and they are cooler to the touch - but at the same time, have more heat coming out of them on mid or high level settings; 
DeLonghi is one such manufacturer / product;  these heaters will typically get a UL rating, so look for that also;

Amazon, would you please re release this heater unit with a 250w mode and a 600w mode? It will cost more but it will be worth it!

No! It’s perfect at 500 watts. 250 watts is way too low and 600 watts usually trips the circuit breaker in older homes. Don’t change anything Amazon.

Question 4

I only want to heat my bedroom at night and save on electricity by not heating the rest of the apartment. Would this be good for that?

It should work depending on the size of your room and the temperature. My room is ~12’ by 10’ and 9’ ceilings and it works just fine I usually wake up and turn it off in the middle of the night because I get too warm. I still run heat in the rest of the house but makes sleeping a little more comfortable
