It has brief explanations of various drum styles and then proceeds to provide very clear notation for the styles as well as providing audio samples of them. It's no-nonsense and exactly what I was looking for. To the authors, thank you for putting the work into this book and audio samples -- it's fantastic.On the Kindle version:I gambled and got the Kindle version of this book and was very, very pleasantly surprised that not only was the text of the book generally well-rendered, but that the audio samples from the physical CDs were included in the Kindle book, embedded into the relevant sections. I was however interested in drumbeats, and had been running into a wall understanding some dance and world music which is heavily percussion based. So I read a few books, most were either too superficial (written for 10 year olds just starting with music) or too in-depth (I really didn't want to know quite so much about salsa) but this book is just perfect for inspiration and ideas on percussion. It explores a style in a page or two, has a representative beat or two and accompanying mp3 so you can check what it sounds like. Really great stuff. Nothing else like it. Every producer and electronic musician on earth should own a copy. It's probably good for drummers, too.Incidentally, the kindle version is great even if the figures could stand to be a bit more higher definition some times. With the "included CD" if you contact the authors they'll send you the mp3 files. Apparently there was some snafu or something with that, They were really friendly about it.
