The light in front lights your path and the steady red light (not flashing) at the other end warns cars coming up from behind you that you are there. The only thing I would prefer is if the flashing option on the red end of the flashlight was allowed at the same time as the front white light. The flashing option only works when the front end is turned off. All in all works great for my morning walks which are currently very dark.
