They can help inverted/flat nipples pushing them out to help baby latch.Breastshields however are shields you put on the nipple while feeding baby, helps with sensitive nipples and latching among other things.Summary: shells are for in between feedings, shields are for during feeding. **Q: For flat nipples will I have to wear this all the time between feedings or will it eventually correct my nipples so I don't have to wear them anymore?** A: This product is designed to soothe sore nipples and protect from further irritation. I can't tell by the descriptions.** A: Medela SoftShells consist of both hard plastic (the outer, dome-shape that has holes in it) and a silicone-like "superior comfort with soft, flexible" backs. SoftShells come as two different packages: one for sore nipples (the one that looks like a skinnier "ring", but is referred to as the wider openining) and one for inverted or flat nipples (the one that looks thicker, is more material). The dome-shaped part that makes contact with the bra is the same in both packages, and according to the instruction booklet, you can buy the backs of the other set to fit the one you purchase. I'll list the Medela parts information for the SoftShells below (I have it out, so why not!?). Life saver. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Helpful, but not perfect *by V***T on January 5, 2015* I found that the more narrow ring of the two provided actually caused more discomfort than it fixed. I wore these shells to protect blistered, painful nipples from friction against clothing, and when I wore the more narrow rings under a bra they pushed so hard into the breast that the pain spread from my nipple to other parts of the breast. They left an angry red line on the breast when they were removed. The wider rings (that I believe are meant to help with inverted nipples) were a little more comfortable for me. As other reviewers have mentioned, the cups have a tendency to collect leaking milk, although the seal is not tight, so milk can still leak under the edge of the rings. I found I was MORE likely to wake with a wet shirt if I wore these at night...they seemed to somehow stimulate a letdown, because I never woke up soaked otherwise. I have, however, poured the milk that collects on one side while I'm nursing on the other directly into the mouth of my baby through the vent holes.
