(Not including the strip of border)** A: Each braid is about 6.5" wide, without any borders. I used 6 or them along with the recommended number and width of borders and made 100x101 " wide King size quilts (2 of them). **Q: how many different color fabrics does this pattern require?** A: I used around 10 different shade to make this quilt. My granddaughter wanted a purple quilt so I used various shades of purple to complement one another. All in a preference you are looking for. The pattern will give you some examples. This is a pattern pamphlet. It does have a template, which is clear perspex without any markings at all, so any triangular ruler with a 45 degree edge would do easily, and so really is not a necessary tool for this pattern at all. I would never have paid so much money for a pattern and plain piece of plastic. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Much better to buy French Braid Obsession by Jane Hardy Miller which is a brilliant book with lots of instructions, illustrations and patterns.
