In my case, I used a putty knife to get it level as possible, then used a sanding block to sand it level , and then applied a layer of drywall joint compound over it to fill any low spots and hide the joint. I was so happy with this thing I used it to redo a door repair: the lock mortise had been drilled out too much and one of the screws holding the latch bolt faceplate in had nothing to hold on to. Some of this epoxy playdough in there and voila! I could finally get that faceplate secured. One of the door jambs had a chunk of wood missing. Fixed that too! I think back on other repairs I've made in the past and how this could have fixed it so much easier. Anyone that has used bondo to repair wood: forget it. The Minwax is solvent-based rather than the Elmer's water-based product, and is reportedly more viscous, so it clings to the wood better while drying. The idea of using either repair liquid is to reinforce the wood and seal it from further moisture damage. I would certainly use one repair liquid or the other before filling with the Damaged Wood repair epoxy. **Q: has anyone seen any references to drying or curing time depending on humidity or temperature for exterior use applications?** A: I applied this in the evening, around 7 pm or so, and it was hard as a rock (completely cured) when I checked it early the next morning. Since it's indoors, the DAP plastic wood would be fine if the damage was small, and the area is not something that holds a screw/nail/fastener. It's also a pretty quick and easy process. The Elmers is more involved to use since it's a 2-part epoxy, but it provides a much stronger repair that can hold a nail/screw/fastener, and can be sanded after it cures. Use this instead. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ to do fine shaping, I used my finger dipped in water ... *by A***N on August 3, 2015* Used this to repair rotted wood on the bottom 6 inches of a french door frame. Snow drift accumulation over a period of years caused the damage before I realized it. After prepping what was left of the wood, I used this Elmer's product to build up the frame and door stop; to do fine shaping, I used my finger dipped in water and it worked very well without sticking. Very similar to shaping caulk with a wet finger. Dried rock-hard overnight and was able to sand and prep for painting the next day. Painted entire door frame which is now as strong and nice looking as when it was new. Great product - no fumes, easy to mix with your hands (I used rubber gloves initially, but ended up using bare hands for smaller pieces & shaping of product, and it was not harmful to the skin and easy to clean off). One other point: if you mix the two parts 1 to 1 (per instructions), then after mixing, you will have plenty of time to apply and shape the product. It is also thick enough that it won't droop or sag on you, yet easy to work with your hands.
