No other artist, apart from J. M. W. Turner, tried as hard as Claude Monet (1840–1926) to capture light itself on canvas. Taschenの25周年シリーズの中でも、MonetとRenoirは特別なサイズの大型本だ。 保管する場所にはやや困るが、専門書の風格がある。 Renoirと比べると、Monetの方は図版が小さめで、全体に地味な印象を受ける。 Monetと言えば、impression, sunriseが印象主義（impressionism）の名前の由来となったことで有名だ。 しかし、本書ではこの名作も特別大きな図版では扱われていない。 Monetの真骨頂は何と言っても、蓮池（water lilies, pond）の連作だ。 これまで、Monetの蓮池は嫌いではない程度の認識だった。 例えば、京都府の大山崎美術館に展示されている蓮池は太鼓橋のある有名な作品だが、特別な感慨を持たなかった。 ところが、先月まで京都で催されたワシントン・ナショナルギャラリー展で見た、同様の構図の蓮池には池の水中まで透きとおって見えるような鮮烈さを覚えた。 そして、本書。 今まで知らなかった、Monetの蓮池の迫力と美。 一作のみだが、418-419ページの見開きのwater lilies（1919-20）はもう抽象画だ。 こんなにvariationがあったとは！ 本シリーズは、どれもそうだが、画家のたどった道を示しながら、探求の末に最後にたどりついた場所を教えてくれる。
