Review: Great radio has to make it unable to transmit on HAM or not on GMRS. That will make it legal. - I think these are an excellent radio. I only get 7 watt reading instead of 10. But the radio picks up two further away repeaters and is finished off nice. But there is one MAJOR PROBLEM. THESE RADIOS TRANSMIT ON THE HAM AND GMRS FREQUECIES. THE FCC HAS MADE IT ILLEGAL TO HAVE A RADIO THAT TRANSMITS ON BOTH. BACK IN 2017 THEY CHANGED THEIR RULES. THE RADIOS HAVE TO BE CERTIFIED BY THE FCC. AND CAN ONLY BE CAPABLE TO TRANSMIT ON EITHER HAM OR GMRS FREQUECIES. I am retired but I still program HAM and GMRS radios for customers. I get many peopole that I have to turn away from programming their radios be cause they are illegal having the capability of transmitting on both. UNDERSTAND I DON"T LIKE OR AGREE WITH THIS FCC RULEING! In 2012 my veterans group bought 50 Baofeng UV5R radios. Along with a lot of accessories. We were informed that we could no longer use the radios after the rule change. We were not even Grandfathered in. I am not a fan of the FCC, I am a big fan in GMRS radios. Here in FL. with all the huricanes and tornados GMRS can be a life saver. When the cell service goes out, your radio will still work HAM radios are excellent also, but the MAJOR DIFFERENCE is to obtain a GMRS license is only $35.00 for 10 year period. NO TEST! But to get a HAM license you need to take a technical test that requires quite a bit of study for the average person. Finnaly I buy a lot of radios from desertcart only. If i get a bad radio it is exchaged or refunded no problem. I had problems in the past buying from distributors or companies direct and have suffered some loses. Never once through desertcart. I HIGHLY recomend buying a radio that is certfied for only one service , HAM or GMRS not both. I do not receive any commision or free radios from desertcart. These are just my opinion after programming and buying a lot of radios. If you currently have a radio that transmit on both HAM and GMRS frquencies, check with the FCC on the rules and legalities.
Review: Do not buy this IF you are buying it to get the speaker mics. They are the worst! - First, I'm going to tell you the only seriously bad thing about this package. The mic is the worst mic I've every had. According to my friend who reported how I sounded, the only way he made out that it was me was that he recognized my voice. He said the best way to describe it was that I sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher or parents. I was completely muffled and unintelligible. If you are buying this package to get the mic, don't! What you need to know: The radio uses standard UV-5RM batteries, which come with a number of radio models. But, with this battery, you can only charge it by USB-C. The radio comes with a dedicated charger as well as a wire that goes from USB-A to USB-C so you can plug it into other devices. I've charged it with a USB-C to USB-C wire in one of my chargers, but only in one of the ports. Some ports do charge it and others don't. The battery does not have the tabs to charge it in the stand up charger. This is not necessarily a bad deal with the battery. I have several of the drop in chargers and plenty of USB-C chargers. I just have to remember to look at the battery before dropping it into a base charger. Now, for the good news. The radio is a good, usual Baofeng UV-5RM radio, but with a blue trim on it and a metal grill. It works just as well and does anything and everything the others do. The long antenna comes with a rubber grommet or washer. I've had a number of antennas come with the washer, but this is the first time I've ever needed it. I only need it on the longer, antenna. This is a unique antenna to me. It is a MaxTalker branded antenna model that I have never seen before. The antenna improves my signal on low power over the standard antenna and a lot over the stubby "dummy load" antenna. The standard short antenna works well and gets me full quieting in the repeater on medium to high power and it has noise and drops out on low power. The stubby-duck, which is labeled as being "Diamond", actually works better than I expected. I've had several of these antennas over they years and they barely get across the street. On low power, I am heard but too deep in the noise to be comfortable to hear in the repeater. But, on medium and high power, I am scratchy, at best, but I am intelligible. I normally only use these antennas on my DMR hot spot because this is the first one that actually did fair. It's only an inch tall, so don't expect miracles with it, but you can use it when close to a repeater or the group you are talking to. I actually like this one. Compared to my other one, it hits the repeater on low power, and the old one doesn't even break the squelch on low power. I do like the looks of this radio more than the other similar brands. I'm partial to blue so that helps, too. The only thing I don't like about this radio package is the speaker mic. It really is the worst of the worst, but if you are buying it for the other accessories, you are ok. 73
