I'm a major bibliophile and magical fantasy is what I always read. This is not only a book with the best twist on vampires I've ever read, but it is also filled with magic and mystery and treason and treachery. Kings, Queens, magicians, sorcerers- even interdimensional travel!! I've read every vampire, werewolf, witch and wizard and faerie book I can find but this series is definitely at the top of my Must Read list. Review: Overall great book - The beginning of this book is a lot of slower pace investigation into a new world and new magical systems. I really enjoyed it because the "attaining magical resources in a low magic world" is one I've been thinking about a lot lately. Later on Halar is drawn in to much more adventure both in his new home and old. It's a great ride that is unfortunately marred near the very end by a scene of great violence against children that (while making sense within context of the events that I'll leave out here) is unpleasant and I think makes the series unreadable for many. Not really much letting off the gas as it moves along without giving you much time to get your bearings. A couple of new and interesting characters as well as a few favorites from before. Some complicated concepts that get explained well enough to help the reader comprehend but not get bogged down by what goes into the magic spells at once making things believable and moving the story along in a satisfying way.
