Review: I love monk fruit extract powder. I have been using it on and off for years. Now that it has gotten popular, there have been more offerings at better price points than when I was first buying it. I love that the price has come down. This particular size is not as much of a bargain (per ounce) compared to larger quantities, but it is a good size for daily use. I like the shaker bottle, I also like that I can spoon some out. I prefer a bottle over a zip closure bag because it is easier and cleaner to work with. Going forward if I buy a bag of it from somewhere, I will reuse bottle to refill. But it takes me a very long time to use up monkfruit powder. Dont need much to do same thing as regular sugar. Just a smidge. Play around with it. I find it easier to work with as a sweetener to top off foods or drinks, rather than trying to bake with it. If only because it is NOT a 1 to 1 ratio swap for regular sugar. Because of that, the volume in a recipe will be off. For that, a baking blend is better. I like allulose. Between the 2, no spike on blood sugar. I dont need many things in my life sweetened. I can whip up a batch of whipped cream, and enjoy it without sweeteners . BUT, when I do want a little added sweetness, I love sprinkling a little monk fruit in it. Mmmmm I'm currently very low carb, so oats are off my list, but a nice bowl of oats, pecans, and berries with a little monk fruit sprinkled on top? oh my... yum! -------------------------------------- So if you are new to it, know that a little bit goes a long way. There is nothing else added, this is pure monk fruit. The entire fruit is sweet, but the natural sugars in monk fruit are not the main compounds responsible for its sweetness. Monk fruit extract actually gets its intense sweetness from unique antioxidants called mogrosides, an inner part of the fruit. There are various mogrosides contained within, and the one used here is specifically mogroside V. "25%", which is a solid amount, and should be listed on quality brands. XPRS states that it is 25%. It gives the greatest bang for the buck, and taste buds. A couple components in the monk fruit are sweeter, but there is less of it--- making it not as conducive to extracting. Another fun fact: The actual product- thought it doesnt say, is going to be from China or Thailand, BECAUSE monk fruit is NATIVE to China and Thailand, nowhere else.
Review: I just finished my 1st bottle of this xprs monk fruit extract powder with 25% mogroside and the first Monk fruit sweetener I have ever had so I didn't know what to expect except from the reviews of other people. I spent hours reading all the reviews of this brand and other brands trying to figure out price, amount of servings, sweetness and whatever else I could think of to compare and I came to the conclusion that this product came out on top in my opinion. The sweetness is determined by the percentage of mogrocides and at 25% that's pretty much up there. I believe this company also has one at 50%, but that costs a lot more and I didn't want to experiment with a really expensive option for the first time. Many of the brands don't even tell you what the mogroside % is but they all tell you that monk fruit is 100 - 200 times the sweetness of sugar. DO NOT BELIEVE THAT! Maybe that's true in the raw form but in the extracted powder I would say it's more like eight times sweeter than sugar. When I first opened it it smelled kind of weird but not really bad and when I tasted a little on my finger it was about the same, unusual but not really bad. It took me about a day to get used to it and see how much to use for my taste. Mostly I use it in liquids, mainly herbal teas and smoothies. I like things pretty sweet and I find that using 1/8 of a level teaspoon to a cup of tea 8 to 10 oz works good for me but adjust to your own taste. When making tea with the monk fruit powder My experience is that it's better to add it to cold water and then boil or microwave or add very hot water over the powder and it will dissolve quickly. It does tend to clump and if you spoon it into steaming hot water it will clump and stick to the spoon but a short time kept in the hot water and it will dissolve. Using in cold or hot liquids in blender works well to. I use about half a teaspoon per day and this first container has lasted me about 2 months. I have felt no ill effects from it and I've read that it does not contribute to dental cavities and has zero calories so I'm definitely sold.
