If the code is written that uses special functions unique to that optical drive that no other optical drive uses (non-standard), it may not function if going over USB. This is very rare. No one in the right mind will use non-standard functions. All the optical drive on the marketplace uses standard optical drives and All OS uses the SATA protocol to address the file system for reading and writing on the optical drive.
