This newer model doesn't have that, but it does have a tinier hole in which the tea slowly yet continuously, drips through. My father enjoys it equally as much as the old one and it produces equally good tea. I love drinking tea, and with just me and my husband in the house, buying a 2 quart model was the right choice. Anything larger would just be a waste of tea and refrigerator space. I enjoy the tea that comes from this tea maker. To better steep tea in this device, bend two jumbo paper clips so they lie flat in the tea bucket but stick down through the little hole 1/2 inch or so. This enables hot water to back up in the tea bucket, and tea bags actually steep. Otherwise, the hole is too large so the hot water runs out quickly, wetting the tea bags but not really steeping them. With this "hack", she's a great tea-maker that takes up minimal counter space. **Q: Does it tell you how much loose tea to use for a whole pitcher?** A: For loose tea try 4tbsp for a whole pitcher. 2tbsp per quart.
