## Description

Review From DPreview.comThe bottom-end of the interchangeable lens camera has become fiercely competitive with manufacturers culling features and cutting-corners to offer a tempting upgrade path from compact cameras, at the most attractive price. As a result we've seen control dials, orientation sensors and even focus motors disappear to reduce the manufacturing costs of these entry-level, gateway cameras. From the consumer's perspective, of course, we've also seen technologies once only in the reach of the professionals filter down to almost compact camera prices. In June 2008, rather than just letting the outgoing model's price drop when the next camera was introduced, Canon launched a completely new model that sat below its then very recent Rebel XSi/450D. The Rebel XS (EOS 1000D in Europe) was unashamedly a cut-down version of the XSi but its mixture of a well trusted sensor and compelling price tag have seen it continue to sell strongly, particularly at the price-conscious end of the market.Two-and-a-half years is nearly two lifetimes in contemporary camera terms, so it was beginning to look like the XS might turn out to be a one-off, until the launch of its replacement in February 2011. The Rebel T3 (EOS 1100D) builds on a successful formula and takes it further, offering a strong (if not exactly cutting-edge) set of features in a body that suggests it should be very capable of competing on price. The 1100D takes a series of familiar-sounding components and folds them together in a distinctly conventional but still capable-sounding package. So there's a 12MP CMOS chip that is likely to date back to the 450D/XSi, coupled with Canon's now-standard 9-point AF system and the 63-area iFCL (Focus, color and luminance sensitive) metering system first seen in the EOS 7D. These combine with the equally well-known Digic 4 processor to offer a camera that's unlikely to offer much in the way of surprises (which should also mean the avoidance of any nasty ones).Canon EOS 1100D specification highlights: 12MP CMOS sensor 9-point AF system (up from 7 on the 1000D) 63-area iFCL colour-sensitive metering (from EOS 7D) 720p movie recording at 30 or 25fps (H.264 compression) 2.7" LCD, 230,000 dots ISO 100-6400 (no expansion) Basic+ creative point-and-shoot mode Eye-Fi wireless SD card compatible menu options

Review: With Canon you can. It's true! - Well, what a fabulous camera. I'm fairly new to DSLR, owning my own anyway. Having generally been a very casual point and shoot photographer in the past, I've always been a fan of superzooms - very easy to use, monstrous zooms and superbly cheap. However, I wanted to take things a little bit more seriously, better results, more lens/filter creative options etc. Having tried my friends 1000D previously, I presumed it would be similar, and it is, nice chunky weighted build, easy to get familiar with etc. Negatives - the hand grip is completely smooth, make sure you keep tight hold! A bizarre design; the older design had a bumpy gripping surface but for whatever reason that is lacking here, if your hands are damp at all be careful! Keep the strap around your neck that's for sure... Loud! Maybe that's something I need to get used to in an SLR or with Canon anyway, but a very loud shutter, you're likely to scare any wildlife off at close range. It's the old version of the lens kit that comes with this, decent lens but seems weird when the included instruction manual is describing the newer version of the lens. Positives - Very easy to use, quick shutter speed, continuous shooting, bright LCD (I had heard negatives about low resolution, but it seems very bright and clear for me). Lot's of fun, enough creative options to get you started, auto flash, good viewfinder, decent life in the battery pack. Be aware first timers, you will certainly need a better lens if you're wanting to shoot any kind of distance, so budget for that almost immediately... All in all, I'd buy it again. Ace starting SLR with lots of lens options to keep it my camera of choice for years rather than months. Great price on here as well! Buy it!
Review: I wish I'd bought a camera like this years ago - This is a lovely bit of kit. I have a 75-300 lens for it as well as the standard lens. We took the camera on a 6 week holiday and I started off simply using it in the default automatic mode - the results were really impressive with fantastic detail, clear crisp colours, fast focus and so on. The PC application to download photos was very fast and easy to use. The other PC applications work well, but I haven't used them heavily. As time went by I experimented with some of the other automatic modes such as portrait, landscape, sports and so on. Each did its job perfectly and the results were simply stunning. The manual for the camera comes on CDRom and after two weeks I started reading it. I discovered the first "advanced" mode which allows you to chose which of the 9 focus points gets used, allows you to use different scene modes, vary the aperture and shutter speed (as you turn the dial it moves between different combinations that are in balance with each other), adjust the 'film' speed, and various other controls. This is a kinda semi-automatic mode, but with more creative control. Again the results were stunning. There are proper advanced modes but I haven't got to them yet. I know there are cameras with more mega-pixels, but this already takes photos that will print on A3. The resolution is so good that I have been able to take poorly composed photos and trim them so that they are better composed, and despite the resultant image obviously being smaller as I've trimmed quite a chunk off, they still print perfectly - if you think about it you could cut a lot off an A3 print and still get a 4x6 or bigger. I haven't found a single thing about the camera that I don't like. It is so easy to use on automatic that my technophobe wife can pick it up and take a great photo. Its advanced features, and I haven't gone very advanced yet, have allowed me to take some really fantastic photos (I'm really pleased with a low-light shot where flash was forbidden - I simply changed the film speed until I could get a fast enough shutter and the picture was glorious). I struggled for ages before buying this as I kept wondering if spending a couple of hundred pounds more on the bigger brothers would be worth it. I'm now glad I bought this and a decent zoom lens as I've got far more out of it than I would have done buying a bigger brother and not being able to afford the zoom lens.

- ISO 100-6400 sensitivity: Low-light shooting without flash is possible thanks to the EOS 1100D's ISO 100-6400 sensitivity range. The camera's 14-bit DIGIC 4 processor helps to control noise and maintain image quality
- Attaching the Camera Strap (Digital SLR): Strap mount eyelets are located on the upper left and right sides of the camera. Attach the left side of the strap to the camera’s left strap mount eyelet, and the right side to the camera’s right strap mount eyelet. Attaching the Strap: Loosen the strap and pass the end through the buckle and the strap keeper to straighten it. Make sure to leave the strap keeper attached to the strap. Pass the end of the strap through the camera’s strap mount eyelet to attach it to the camera. Make sure to pass the strap through the strap mount eyelet from the bottom as shown below. The front of the strap clearly displays the Canon logo. Fold the strap over, and pass it through the strap keeper. Next, pass the strap through the inside of the buckle. To remove excess slack from the strap, follow steps~ as illustrated in the image below. Pull the strap to take up any slack and make sure the strap will not loosen from the buckle. Repeat the process with the other end of the strap on the opposite side. Make sure the strap is not twisted before attaching it to the camera

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Q1 - Does it have a long exposure mode? Q2 - I am looking to capture the northern lights with it, do you think its capable?**
A: Yes it has a Bulb exposure mode. This keeps the shutter open for as long as you want. See page 98 of the manual. You will need a cable release, they are very cheap around £5.

**Q: How do you transfer images from this camera to a Samsung Chromebook? (bear in mind I can't install software on this laptop) Is there a USB cable? Thx**
A: You need software through the Chrome apps then you can put the card in the side slot it as the same as you get in Boots

**Q: With this camera can you change the depth of field, aperture and shutter speed? And is it recommended to a beginner with limited camera knowledge?**
A: This is a very good camera for a beginner,it has all the stuff a pro uses but at a good price. It saves you having to change to a more expensive camera as you improve.

**Q: can it be used as a webcam**
A: Sorry do not have a clue. Webcams are cheap to buy anyway.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great camera
*by S***Y on 4 April 2014*

Amazon as usual very slow to despatch but that aside its' a great little camera, good spec and easy to operate once you've read the manual a few times. Disappointed it didn't come with the Image Stabilised lens although you shouldn't need that at these short focal lengths. I also bought a 55-250 IS lens where you sometimes need stabilisation at the longer focal length. I think the 12 Mp quality is un-necessary unless you are blowing up pictures for street size posters, the lowest setting is good enough for PC viewing and 3 Mp good for A4 prints. It's light and well balanced with through the lens viewing - very practical camera which comes with some good software for editing and printing. You can also operate the camera from your PC, not only shooting but changing settings. Canon also have some good support features on its website where you register it. I not only use it for terrestrial photography, I use it with my 8" telescope and spotting scope with the appropriate adapters - it gives excellent results with both and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it in spite of the fact that the price went up by £5 since I ordered mine - it's still good value and probably beats all other prices. The only complaint I have about the kit is that you'd expect to be able to photograph something straight away - you can't - you then have to buy an SD card to store the images.
