The KBGT brews a full 40oz pot of Coffee in six minutes. The thermal carafe will keep your Coffee hot up to an hour. Review: Fantastic coffee maker, with one important usage tip - I'm an engineer who has worked from my home office for more than 20 years, and coffee is an important part of my day. I typically brew either 6 or 7 pots of coffee at home per week, and I have e-cycled more than my share of coffee brewers that failed after a year or two. I invested in this model after reading a lot of online reviews and reading its documentation, and I'm quite happy with its quality and the quality of the coffee it brews. As an engineer, I appreciate designs that anticipate the need for preventive maintenance as well as repair. The Moccamaster is easily disassembled for cleaning, and easy disassembly also means easy repair. Removable parts fit together with simple, clean interlocks, gravity, and (in one case) friction, and the friction fit drip nozzle arm is metal-to-silicone, not cheap plastic. After months of heavy use, I can see no signs of wear, nor is it becoming loose or sloppy. The coffee tastes great. I would not consider myself a coffee scholar, but I know what I like, and I care enough to purchase whole-bean coffee from a local roaster and to grind each day's coffee fresh in the morning, not in batches. Insulated thermal carafe, rather than an actively warmed pot, is the ONLY way to go if you care about coffee flavor, unless you are sharing with others and will drink a whole pot in a short time. Coffee that is continuously heated after brewing will rapidly acquire a stale, burned taste. It's vile! This carafe is very well insulated. I brew a pot in the morning, fill an insulated mug right away, then replace the open brewing cap on the carafe with the thermal-sealed lid. The remaining coffee in the carafe is still nicely warm at noontime or even at the end of my workday and remains drinkably warm until I finish the last of it in the evening. (For reference, I don't mind if the coffee is just warm rather than staying hot -- it's worth it to avoid the stale taste.) The fully sealed thermal lid is important, and without it the coffee would not stay warm for long. There are some minor things I think could be improved about this model, and one "important usage tip" that I will share with other purchasers here. First, I wish there was a way to slow the rate of water flow into the grounds, to brew a slightly stronger pot of coffee. That's personal preference, of course. This brewer does a nice, smooth brew using water at the correct temperature, but since I take the trouble to buy good coffee, I'd prefer if the water spent more time in the grounds to absorb a bit more of that richness. Second, I'd like to see a pouring lip on the carafe. The carafe is made of spun stainless steel, and the pouring rim is a perfect circle. It works fine with the open brewing cap in place, but once you swap for the thermal cap, you have to unscrew that just the right amount to avoid a wider stream that can miss the cup. The circular lip doesn't really help to narrow the stream, whereas I think a modest outward bend in the lip, opposite the handle, would take care of this problem. I've done some sheet metal work as a hobby and have considered trying this as a DIY modification, but since it's stainless steel I'm nervous about deforming the threaded fitting for the lid. Finally, I'll offer this tip about a problem I encountered, and how I've solved it. Every so often, I found that the coffee would overflow the filter cone and make a mess all over the countertop and floor. At first, I thought the valve under the filter was becoming clogged, but careful cleaning didn't solve the problem. My next theory was that the filter paper was pressing too tightly against the inside of the brewing cone and blocking flow, so I checked to make sure there was a gap at the bottom of the filter paper (there are small plastic ribs inside the cone designed to assure clearance around the sides of the filter). This still didn't solve the problem. I tried varying the grind, thinking perhaps I was grinding too fine and the coffee itself was obstructing the flow, but that didn't help, either. I finally figured out what was happening and solved it. The problem was *too much* gap at the bottom of the filter, not too little! The rate of water flow in this brewer is such that the coffee filter *almost* fills to its brim during normal operation. When there's too much gap below the filter paper, the pool of water and coffee grounds touches the drip nozzles, and there is enough volume displaced that it can overflow the paper cone. *Then* the exit hole becomes plugged, and you've got a mess. The solution was simple: When placing the coffee and filter into the brewing chamber, gently press it down to be sure it is seated fully, and that the filter's seam is bent aside to allow it to settle all the way into the plastic housing. I've not had a single overflow since I figured this out. Aside from the very minor quibbles (not being able to increase brew strength, and the lack of a shaped pouring spout on the carafe), I'm quite happy with the Moccamaster overall, and I am glad I finally spent the money to get a durable, well-designed coffee maker. I debated between four stars and five stars, but the two minor quibbles were not enough to deduct a star from a product that is working very well for me and which I use almost every day.
Review: It's a great coffee maker. - This coffee maker is great. I have considered the pros and cons of buying this coffee maker for at least 5 years. The thing that held me back is the price. I kept asking myself would it really, really make superior coffee. After all I had Wirecutter's second most popular coffee maker for about 8 years and I was happy with it. Sure there were things I didn't like about it, but mostly it produced good coffee. I've had this Mocca Master for about a month now and I'm happy I bought it. Both my husband and I could immediately tell the difference is the coffee. It was smoother, less acidic than our old coffee maker. We used the same coffee as before as well as the same coffee grinder, the same type of grind and the same amount of coffee. Both of us could tell a difference. The cup of coffee just tasted better. Most important to me was that it was less acidic. We bought one with a stainless steel carafe and we put hot water in it the night before so the coffee will brew hot. It does stay hot (if you do this extra step) for hours after you make it in the morning. It isn't for everyone because it doesn't have a way to set it up the night before so you can just push a button in the morning. That isn't a issue for us because we have time to go through the grinding, setting up procedure in the mornings. The inside of the carafe is glass, while our old carafe was stainless steel inside. I like the glass better. It's easy to clean. You just drop some dishwasher powder inside the carafe and pour in boiling water. Let it sit for a while (we let it sit overnight), pour it out, rinse a couple of times and the carafe is clean. My husband says the brew time is shorter than our old coffee maker. I'm not in on that assessment because he brews the coffee before I get up in the morning. I'm not sorry I spent the money on it and I hope to have it for many more years. But I understand the feelings of anyone who has a pause before investing in the coffee maker. If you love good coffee, this is the one that produces the best I've ever had.

## Features

- Note: 1)Too coarse a grind, too little coffee, or insufficiently tamping the grounds before brewing can all lead to inadequate pressure for a proper brew. 2)It is important to note that the amount of espresso extracted will vary depending on the grind size and amount and reprogramming may be needed when the size and amount are adjusted

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can I fit my hand in the carafe for cleaning?**
A: I have a brush as mentioned by other responders to the question. I find one of the most effective cleaning methods is to put dishwashing liquid in about 1/4 of the pot, add a dishwashing cloth. Put the solid lid on the pot and swirl it around to clean the interior.

**Q: What's the difference between the KBT and the KBGT?**
A: Have the KBGT for now. Also ordered a replacement KBT (non auto switch). The KBT was DOA (appears to have had a failed repair made -- additional repair order appearing sticker on the bottom). The KBT we received had a more obviously tapered double wall stainless carafe (as seen in some pictures of the various models). The KGBT has the thermos glass type. We are not fans of the KBGT. It will be replaced. Not mentioned is the little plastic plate under the carafe. Under engineered attachment point if you have to move your coffee maker (falls off easily). The plate is used to space the carafe high enough to activate the switch (~2-3mm). The answer would have been easier to have an attachment on the carafe to make it taller (or, lowered the automatic arm that 2-3mm). If you can fill yours where it sits you will not care about the plate (it will not go anywhere if left stationary). Also, the arm the filter cup slides into is spring loaded. Makes it seem frail and cheap -- that's a one week user observation, not a time based use evaluation. 5 year warranty, so shouldn't be an issue. We run a full pot, and have the patience to wait for it to fill so the automatic shut off valve is of no issue for us. We have glass thermal carafes we transfer our coffee into so the next person can make their own (leaded vs unleaded). So, big hitter: switch/plate stationary vs manual switch and no plate and easily movable.

**Q: Does this model have the brew thru lid in addition to the standard travel lid closure?**
A: No Idea what brew thru lid means. I have two of these and they are best coffee makers on the market.

**Q: I want to make sure this item is the KBGT 741, but the model number is not listed here.**
A: It is the KBGT 741. It is a wonderful machine. Cooks magazine just came out with a wonderful review of this machine and I totally agree with it. I am a coffee nut and it does make great coffee.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Almost perfect auto-drip coffee.
*by J***) on January 7, 2023*

This coffee machine makes nearly perfect coffee. Seriously, the best out of any auto-drip machine I've ever used. The only two nits that I have with it are that the plastic base that goes under the carafe is sort of flimsy and doesn't tolerate being moved across the counter without coming out of place, so it's best to find a fixed location, and the lid for the carafe itself has a gasket that's not particularly prone to staying where it should. But after dealing with tepid coffee and machines that oveflow themselves all over my counter from Walmart (Mr. Coffee and Black & Decker), I feel like the Moccamaster is worth it despite a couple of issues that could probably be fixed with a minor revision. Using a meat thermometer, I was able to verify that the temperature of the water flowing through the brew basket with the Moccamaster is 205 degrees F, which is almost exactly where it needs to be in order to brew proper coffee. My previous machine, a Black & Decker, started out at only 196 when I bought it, but made acceptable coffee for a $50 system, until it didn't. Where most people praise the Moccamaster's design is that it has a solid heating element that lasts a very long time without serious trouble whereas some of the big box store machines have one that gets iffy in a year or two. By the end of the B&D, two years later, it was only reaching 180.5 F coming out of the brew basket, which is just not sufficient or acceptable, but perhaps humorously about 10 degrees F hotter than where my Mr. Coffee was at 2 years. Pay attention to the Moccamaster owner's manual. Especially how to descale the machine. DO NOT USE VINEGAR. Follow the instructions with actual coffee maker descaler. It's not expensive. If you do not descale as instructed, any machine can die or start making nasty coffee. It's also important to clean the brew basked, carafe, and other parts that come into contact with the coffee after each use. You should also take note of how much coffee (grounds) to use. The included scoop is two US Tbsp, and the cups given on the reservoir are not standard American cups (6 ounces), but rather 4 oz (European), so there is an included chart. Basically, 10 is 7 level scoops, 8 is 6, 6 is 4, and 4 is 3. If you're using a standard Tablespoon, then double the number of scoops, leveling each one as you go. The system uses #4 cone filters, and I've been using Brew Rite from Walmart. I noticed no discernible difference in taste between the 3 Moccamaster samples included in the box and the Brew Rite. Brew Rite filters are about 4x less expensive. The instructions recommend wetting the filters. Well, if you do it with hot water, this works, but cold water doesn't. I tried it with cold and what ended up happening was a basket overflow. Whoopsie. I've tasted it both ways and can't tell you there's any difference in flavor, so I've just gone back to doing what I've always done, which is using dry filters. Overall, I do recommend buying this machine. I got mine from Warehouse Deals in Like New condition to save some money and it's working well so far.
