It opens and closes nicely. The grapple part hooks in securely and holds great. I don't know that I'd use it for climbing. Well, I know that I wouldn't trust it for climbing. It's fun to play around with, and handy for tossing a line etc. My kid loves it too. My only real gripe about it is that if you don't have it in Grapple mode, the extra batwing/hook has no place to be stored. So it'll get lost for sure. Other than that, cool little toy/tool.
