So, I returned it for a refund. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Four Stars *by T***. on 20 January 2017* ok ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great accessory for ensuring your oven-cooked and barbecued meats are cooked to perfection *by C***B on 12 July 2016* This product arrives in a plain white cardboard box, containing the main unit (bubble wrapped), temperature probe (which plugs into the main unit), a basic set of instructions and 2 AAA batteries (an unexpected bonus as they are not supposed to be included, according to the product page).The main function of this device is as an oven thermometer. The unique selling point of this particular product is the long cable on the oven-proof temperature probe, and the thin heat-resistant steel wire that you can thread out of the oven door while keeping it tightly closed, without damaging the oven seal or the cable itself. This prevents the oven losing heat each time you check the temperature, which is inefficient, costly and increases cooking time. It can also be used as a simple kitchen timer when you don't require the thermometer functionality - there is a switch on the back to select "cook" (thermometer) or "timer" mode.When using in thermometer mode, the display shows the set and current temperatures, and there is an alarm function to alert you when the meat has reached the desired temperature.It is possible to choose Celsius or Fahrenheit temperature scales which is good for the international market. Personally Celsius makes more sense to me but I know a lot of older people who prefer to work in Fahrenheit. The way to switch between C and F is a little non-intuitive but is explained in the manual - you just need to press the touchscreen button labelled "S/T" for 3 seconds.The unit is pre-programmed with temperatures for the most common types of meat - beef, pork, chicken (abbreviated as "chick" on the display due to space constraints), veal, lamb, ham and fish. There is also a seventh mode labelled "prog" for user-defined temperatures. For each of the modes you can choose between well done, medium, medium rare and rare, each of which has different temperatures.I really like the design, especially the metallic outer bezel on the main unit. The display has a backlight which comes on every time you touch it, in order to make the display easier to read. The backlight automatically turns off after a few seconds to preserve battery life.
