You have been warned! It is 44% alcohol, slightly less than Angostura. It comes only in tiny, brown, straw-paper-wrapped 20 ml bottles (about 2/3 oz), sold three to a box. Whereas Angostura comes from Trinidad & Tobago, Underberg is from Germany. Like Angostura, Underberg's ingredients include gentian, a bitter plant extract with components that trigger a sequence of digestive processes to help deal with too much food. The flavor of gentian is evident in Angostura but much less so in Underberg because it includes "a blend of aromatic herbs and spices from 43 countries" and no sugar, caramel, or artificial flavors. In 1824, in Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar), Venezuela, Simón Bolívar's German surgeon general created an herbal cure for his troops' stomach aches and fevers. In 1875, when things had gotten too hot in Venezuela, Dr. Siegert's three sons moved the business to Port of Spain, where it still produces Angostura using the original secret recipe.
