However if you are not going to use a roof rack mount, I do recommend you have some kind of a thin padding to keep from scratching the top of the car. Either weather stripping on bottom of car carrier or a rubber/foam pad to lay inbetween. Theyre easy to find on desertcart. I used both for safety. Also these are very easy to carry around.
