I have the 12-18 on a 10 gal, and it did look a little short to me at first but puts out a ton of light, and I would like my fish to have some shadey corners to get out of the bright light so it's really perfect. The brackets are a little short, it would feel more secure with an extra inch of bracket, but then I dunno if it would fit on a 5.5 gal, which It fits nicely on. I cannot definitively tell if this size is aluminum casing, but the 18-24 in model is. Things I love: -It is very low profile. Everytime I go anywhere near it it falls off the side.
