However I'm thrilled to say that, having not bought into the Guitar Hero franchise until now, my choice to get the Metallica Bundle pack is fantastic value for money. I've looked forward every day to coming home and trialling a new song or improving on a sublime metal anthem, along with my younger 16 yr old brother, who rates it as a superior choice compared to his own Guitar Hero III and World Tour mix of music. The selection of songs is appropriately targeted to be a realistic leap of skill in progressing through the tracks, earlier songs usually having a slower tempo, but still challenging enough to both inexperienced and expert players, even just between Beginner, Easy and Medium modes. The Guitar itself is styled differently than its forebear with brilliant art. Although the faceplate can be interchanged and even comes with stickers for personal customisation, I see no reason to change it. The neck of the guitar is subtly different with a supplementary touchpad keyed to the same sequence as the buttons further up, to enable a "wah" to be added to the keystrokes of the buttons. The layout of the body of the guitar is also different, with a new Star Power Button, making it easier to rack up points than having to tilt the guitar so the motion sensors pick up the change in orientation. Having attempted to use the GHIII on the Wii before, I struggled to tilt it effectively and continue playing, so the button is a very welcome addition. NB however, this new feature cannot be supplanted into the older GHIII Guitar by changing the necks over as the connections are significantly different. The Whammy bar is also conveniently longer and can be angled close within reach of the strum bar, so as a relative newbie, I feel that the designers have done a lot to encourage this guitar to not only look stunning but also be very user-friendly to those unfamiliar to guitars. The Game itself is a fantastic coverage of the majority of Metallica's best tracks. Admittedly, a few personal favourites, such as Ride the Lightning and Holier Than Thou, are not present, but it certainly does not detract from the glorious renditions of the classics like Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, all performed by CGI rendered likenesses of the actual band in exclusive concert for this franchise to the backdrop of suitable locales. In this way, the game fulfills the hefty promise to enable the player to believe they are performing on stage near to James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo. All the Metallica Songs are played using the Metallica Legends, whilst the selected guest songs revert to performances by the games default band and your customisable character. I was doubtful when choosing to purchase this game whether it might be an indulgence, having little real passion to personally play a guitar. If you like Metallica you will love play this game and listen to the Metallica songs at same time.
