The soles have great grip and I never felt like I was slipping or sliding around. The heals and toes are enclosed to better guard against scrapes and stubbs. The water drains out easily and the materials are definitely waterproof and dry out pretty quick. The only odd thing about them is that they seem to run a bit large. Fortunately for me, a friend advised me of this and so I ordered a size smaller than I normally would. If you do the same, I know you will be happy with the Choprock Shandals. Not too little, not too much. I like that when hiking and backpacking with these on, you can tackle water crossings quickly by not changing into water shoes, sandals, or thongs because these have great drainage. If you are worried about sticks and ricks, I didn't really have that problem, and when it got coller, I just put on some wool socks. They're lightweight when compared to regular hiking/backpacking footwear. I weighed them once, but forgot, however I do recall them not weighing very much at all.
