It may so tight that it’s air tight and forms a vacuum when you pull on it. In that case drill a VERY tiny hole (1/64 inch) in the middle of the bottom. To vent the box. That will help when opening and closing the box. If it’s still to tight to open properly, I suggest using compressed air (no higher than 30psi) and use short burst around the seem where the top and bottom meet. That should start to break it free so you can wiggle it back and forth as you pull them apart. After it’s open, put a VERY THIN coat of silicone lubricant on the two mating surfaces. By VERY THIN I mean just enough to leave a finger print. Then work the lid on slowly and squarely twisting it back and forth until it’s completely closed. Then take it off the same way; twisting it back and forth as you push or pull. Once you work it a few times it should be ok. Remember to denier that little hole you drilled. When I finish reading a book I normally leave the dart in the book for future use. The only problem is with older books say before say 1960 the pages are much thicker so the darts don't slip on as easily as with modern books where the paper is thinner and smoother. I know that it is not a screw top but I can't get the top off!** A: I purchased two of these separately from different suppliers. One of the tins arrived damaged. Perhaps a heavy box was placed on the padded envelope that the tin was shipped in because on one side, the lid was squashed down past the extended edge on the bottom that the lid is supposed to rest on. I love them and they work very well! Sometimes, when you get tiny bookmarks, you have to work to find them but not so with these! Even though they are very small, they are easy to find to open to the right page. As fragile as the pages of a Bible are, which is very hard for me to comprehend just why, these bookmarks stay in place as if the pages are thicker but they do not damage the page. I have been increasingly rough when removing them, trying to reach the point where the metal clips would damage the page. I have not found the point where they will fail, and I don’t think they will. Now I have been rough enough with the pages to risk tearing them and the bookmarks have not failed. But I never treat a book this roughly and I have decided that the bookmarks are not going to fail but I am going to tear the pages if I don’t cut it out. One last comment: you get quite a few bookmarks in the tin and as much as I love them, my daughter would love them even more. She loves the smell and the feel of a book and prefers a book over an ebook. I am happy either way and love not having to lug around several books when I travel. She will carry the extra weight.
